Supernatural: Sympathy for the Devil
Ooooh! I like! Spoilers abound!
I think they are handling the whole Sam-screwed-up-thing well. Does the character have massive guilt? You betcha. Can he make it right in a couple of eps? No, not really, and certainly not from Sam's pov. He's gonna have to work this out slowly and painfully. Will they keep beating the Sam over the head with this each ep? Gawd, I hope not. I hope this was a case of picking the scab so it can get back to healing type of thing--get it all out there from each character and then leave it be.
It was harsh to hear Bobby tell Sam to lose his number but I think Sam needed that reaction to validate that yes, other people know he really fucked up. But when I heard it, it made me feel defensive towards Sam as it was too extreme. Sam is a good person; you don't throw away good people. But not only was it a demon talking smack, it was the writer's getting the audience on the same page about Sam by making us feel like defending him. Good move!
Hearing Dean say it feels like he can't trust Sam was harsh and it surprised Sam, too. But last season neither brother was actively trusting the other. Trust is something they both have to rebuild. But it does bring to the table that Sam has to work to regain the trust. And I think Dean was talking about his feelings, which are different from the mind and knowing. Sometimes feelings are harder to change than knowing something.
I love what they did with Cas. Cas was low man on the totem pole when it came to getting whumped. Any angel could best him and he was tied down with a regulator when it came to acting. He is his own agent now and not whippable by those good for nothing angels. But is he God's agent? I would like that, personally. He certainly will be unpredictable, and I like that as I don't want him to be the Get Out of Jail Free card for the boys. I went all shivery when he etched whatever on their rib cage. That evens things up for the boys with respect from angels. It's important that the villains be powerful, but if they're too powerful, having the good guys beat them isn't too believable. This would tend to even the playing field.
I like that God could be back in the building. There are so many interpretations of God--what kind of God will He be? A kind and loving one? An old testament kind of guy? Hmmmm....
As for Lucifer's vessel, I would find it satisfying if he didn't get killed and at the end of it all, be freed from Lucifer and having a change of heart. He's a wounded soul and it would be nice if he was healed of his pain. I doubt that will happen, but it would be nice.
So, is Bobby truly paralyzed?
ETA: I doubly like that Cas etched the protection on both Dean and Sam. So, according to whoever is in Cas' corner, the boys are on the same team. I like that a lot.
