More on financial stuff

I'm watching Real Time with Bill Maher. One of his guests is Naomi Klein who wrote The Shock Doctrine. To bottom line their points:

The lead up to this crisis has been spectacularly profitable to Bush's friends and that's why it has been allowed to happen. Wall Street handed out 33 billion in bonuses last year. Wall Street is happy today because it's Christmas morning and all their debt has been removed. If McCain becomes president, he will use this crisis to say, we can't afford Social Security or health care and it must be privatized. He will promote even further deregulation "to speed recover." This bailout will severely handicap programs that assist Americans in need. Deregulation will breed corruption because there is no rules to stop it.

Shouldn't I be hearing these perspectives on the news and not a comedy show??

I'm glad someone is spreading the word. I've given up hope on the news media - at least TV - even attempting to explain to people what has been going on. There's been a financial orgy on wall street for years now, and everyone else is paying the bill. And yes, McCain would love to private social security; he's stated so on numerous occasions.

I can see how the Rep would push it through but maybe with Obama and Dem majority there will be some humanity left in DC? So freaky scary.

Infuriating isn't it? I feel this way every time I watch the Daily Show. John's always downplaying the show because it's on Comedy Central, but hell you find out more through his sketches than through the actual news media.

How many people don't even realize McCain was using a reworded version of Shrub's acceptance speech at the RNC? I showed the Daily Show's comparison of the two speeches to some co-workers and they about died.

Edit: Has anyone but John mentioned on air about what's her face charging women for their rape kits? I figured CNN would be all over it, but never saw anything.

Since even *asking* her a question is labeled an attack, I guess the media will just let that whole issue drop. Cowards.

I missed that about the similarites between the speeches of Bush and McCain. I guess I'll have to put The Daily Show on a season pass, too. I just get tired of the penis jokes. But I suppose if I can put up with Maher I can put up with that.

I'll have to check into that when I come home. Thanks.

As I would've said last night if the Maternal Unit hadn't been hovering wanting the PC...

I wish there was a good hard-hitting journalist left in the popular media.

Schmooze her up a bit, make her feel like she's talking to Faux News again and then wham! "So, tell all the women here why it is you feel if they are raped they should be made to literally pay for it."

Well, Naomi Klein was on the news here when she presented her book (In English and translated). Ideology she's too fringe to be part of either of your parties. Here she identifies with the new social wave, which here echoe in some of the left parties.

BTW, if you want to be completely scared, read her previous book, NoLogo.

I find it completely scary that the people who have to elect such an important position have no idea about what's really going on. Not that you would have much in your hands to do, but you'd be informed!

I'll have to read that. Thanks.
