Comic Con

There's not much to tell because it was hot and humid and I didn't try to see it all. There were many delights, but I mainly stuck to the Stargate agenda. I managed to buy a few of those limited edition Daniel action figures, and I got a couple extra of those Stargate keyrings SciFi was handing out.

I did attend the talk and thought, over all, Gary Jones did a good job moderating. Nothing to report on the spoiler front; Joe Mallozzi hurriedly rattled off a few things that were already on the net, with a bored voice. In fact, he and Mullie took the attitude of "I'm too cool for this/I'm too bored by this" that disruptive boys take in class. Most of the questions asked of them had to be repeated because they simply weren't paying attention. Hello! It's only 75 minutes and you're in front of 8,000 people! Can't you at least act like a professional for that long? And when someone asked about the 200th episode, Joe Mallozzi emphasized that there would be parts of it that we'd hate. Chris Judge immediately commented about how that wasn't a very good way to entice people to watch the show, "hey, you're going to hate it!" Nora, the Scifi rep didn't look too thrilled either, and even Gary Jones made some comment about it. Jeeze...if Cooper or Wright can't make it, I think it'd be better to let some of the directors come down to Comic Con next year.

Let's see, I didn't take any pictures because I was too far back. Nora did emphasize that people needed to watch the shows live if they have Tivo, because it will effect the ratings. I don't follow that. Does that mean I have to watch that show in that hour for it to count? What if I time shift it by 30 minutes?

Aside from the writers, Nora of Scifi, Chris and Gary, there was Cliff Simon and Robert Picardo (who is VERY funny.)

The Atlantis panel was about the same. David Hewitt got asked the majority of questions and strangely, I'm not sure Joe Flannigan was asked any (though he did chime in a few times.) Again, Mallozzi quickly rattled off spoilers like he was reciting a boring shopping list. They showed a few snippets, but nothing really cool.

I got to the panel an hour early to get a decent seat and got to see Ray Bradbury, so that was alright! He told wonderful stories. I also went to a panel about the 50th anniversary of Forbidden Planet. They've restored the film and the special release of the dvd will include a 6 inch Robby the Robot. A friend went to the Brisco County panel and she remarked a number of times what a big difference there were in the attitudes of those writers and the ones for SG.

Oh, I also went to the public showing of Eureka (which I liked) and SG1. A couple of people in my party really didn't like Atlantis, and as we hadn't eaten and it was 11pm, we left to go eat. It was a lot of fun to hear the fan reaction. Vala got the biggest applause, I think.

And that was that. I spent a majority of my time trying to stay cool and hydrated. Snakes on a plane seemed to be the film with the biggest buzz.

I consider Ray Bradbury a living national treasure. I saw him at a bookshop signing in Westwood a couple of years ago. His health/physical condition is very bad now, and it makes me sad because he's obviously such a vital person, emotionally still if not physically. I'm glad I saw him speak, and talked to him for a second, but I wish it could have been about 10 years ago. I treasure every word he writes, and has written.

He had a couple of projects just finished and in the midst of doing, so he's still very active, very vital. He did have a guy sitting next to him repeating all the questions loudly in his ear, though. He did the screenplay for Moby Dick, I didn't know that.

Neat report! Thanks for sharing it, tenaya!

You're welcome.

I really should have mentioned more about how fun it was to watch SG1 with a large group. The gasps, the giggles...the groans of appreciating whenever Daniel looked deliciously sleepy. *g*

you were there?

Hey there, it's Michelle from SG cons past. I was there too -- sorry but not surprised I missed you in those crowds! I didn't have quite the negative reaction to Mallozzi you did, but I did love watching the Stargates in a crowd; that was cool. I spewed out a report, at Solutions, fyi.

I missed you in that crowd? Go figure! *g*

Yeah, Comic Con is just too damn big anymore. I went with Deej, Joyce and Paula and they suffered mightily from the heat and were overwhelmed by the crowd. At dinner that night they toasted to 'their first and last Comic Con.'

GREAT report. Very thorough! Nice photos, especially that last one of DH.
Vegas wouldn't be bad if it was non-summer. We were at the Sheraton Marina down near the airport. Luckily, they added a bus to go there.

The Art of Stargate looks great. Do you think you'll try to get one? I'm undecided. Very glad to hear that CJ was going to get some deals down for the Men of SciFi. That great news!

I guess Mallozzi appeared better by comparison after seeing the Simpson panel. I missed that. But honestly, they had to ask folks to repeat the question because they weren't paying attention. It was embarrassing and rude. Oh well. Anyway, I'm glad you took the time to reference the different questions. I'd forgotten some already.

Again, great report! BTW, will I see you at the Burbank SG con?

Glad you enjoyed the report! I can't believe I didn't see any of you. Well, I guess I can, but it's still weird... it would have been nice to have dinner mates -- I didn't know anyone! Did you find Cathy? I was so exhausted Friday afternoon I paid some poor young man to tow me to the hotel on a pedi-cab. That was before I realized I could take the free shuttle... It was easier to walk to the convention center, though. 7 blocks but downhill. Hot and humid for sure, so thank god for pre-reg and the inside a/c.

I plan to buy the art book. It will be a real piece of art all on its own; too hard for me to resist even for those bucks. Paul Brown was so sweet, that was the highlight of my trip anyway.

I didn't notice JM et al not paying attention, but I was so stressed about not getting good pictures after spending all that $ to be there, it was hard to take it all in. I also managed to forget my voice recorder (!) so I ended up video-ing the big screen with one hand, a couple of minutes at a time, while trying to take pics with the other... a true tragicomedy.

I won't say for sure it was my last Comic Con... I guess it would depend on who is there celebrity-wise. I will be at the Burbank Con! My only other one for this year. I don't have a great seat but I refuse to worry about it anymore. I wonder if the con will be in the wake of the last seasons of the Stargates :-( See you there, anyway!

I did find Cathy on Friday night for the showing of SG/SG1/Eureka. We played phone tag and I found her in line. Afterwards we went to dinner. If only we'd known you were there, we would have invited you. :)

Our hotel was out near the airport and they did get a shuttle bus for it which I used to get home on Friday and Saturday. Going to the con we split for a taxi because it was too damn hot waiting for the bus!

I'm very tempted by the art book. Very.

I figured you must have recorded it somehow as I kept saying, "oh yeah! I forgot about that question" as I read your report. Sounds like you needed an assistant to help you with the electronics.

I'm glad to hear you'll be a Burbank. I think I'm rooming with Dana Jeane again. I'll just be buying the day pass type of ticket. Yeah, it could be a wake. I think SciFi should renew, but it's a business decision. At least Michael will spread his wings and do other things now. Nothing as good as Daniel probably. Hopefully we can touch base in person again, maybe go out to dinner--squee over the lovely Mr. Shanks.
