Better news on the Scooter front
Mar. 29th, 2008 12:13 pmThe old guy rallied about 4am! He finally ate and drank a little. I put him in his litter box and he peed, then he looked up for the ride to take him back to the living room. I held him for a hour or so longer to make sure the food would stay down then went to bed as Mom was going to get up about 7. When I got up, I found she hadn't offered him water or food, just held him. She's 75 and some of her decisions are beginning to worry me. I offered him more food and he actually ate a normal amount! He drank a little, and staggered like a drunken sailer to his box, then he staggered into the bathroom where we keep his usual water bowl. Everyone, humans included, think the water from the bathroom sink tap tastes a lot better so that's why the water bowl is in there. Then his energy bottomed out after that, so I gave him a lift back to Mom's lap. He's talking some (mostly grumpy complaints) and able to lift his head. He even is purring on occasion. Now he's curled up with his normal body posture/flex instead of lying there like a watery pancake on a skillet. Big, big big improvement.
Another of his nine lives? A rally before the end? Who knows? He is better today and we'll take that. We do think it was his heart even though a search on the net said cats don't have heart attacks. It's not GI, it's not bone/muscle. It's not neuro. What else would cause an immediate debilitated state? Anyway, he's stabilized for now. We still don't see the point in taking him to the vets, especially now that he's eating and drinking. In humans before we got all fancy with stints and enzymes and bypass grafts, if a person survived the acute stage, they could live for a while longer with a dodgy heart. Perhaps that's where we are now. I do know that cats tend to stable for years and when they start to fail, they can go pretty fast. All we can do is let him know how much we care for him. He is really a very contrary type of cat...lots of coyote or trickster in him. He's currently saying he's not going anywhere. *g*
I called in to work again to day. Mom needs to finish getting her room ready for the FiOS guy on Monday and I'm afraid she'd totally forget about offering Scooter food and water. I'm off to Vancouver on Tuesday for 7 days. Hopefully without distractions she'll be a more diligent care taker.
So, as you can tell if you've been reading this journal for a year or so, I do tend to get very emotional when I think I'm losing the little guys. I deeply appreciate the caring words from so many of you and I'm glad to say things are better for now.
