I've finally caught up to the four episodes that have been shown. There was the first one, the centipede one, the croc-thingy one, and the dodo one. It's...pretty bad but I can't stop myself from watching them. I can't even mention how implausible it all is. The SFX vary a great deal. The monsters all move too fast (yet missing the stunned humans again and again--well, the regular characters at least) yet I find myself noticing the cool reflections of the beasties. Torchwood meets Jurassic Park? Yeah. Unfortunately, they're using the TW technique of the frenetic camera work and loud music to tell me that something EXCITING IS HAPPENING!!!!! I really find that annoying. I was always more of a Hitchcock type of girl, appreciating suspense over too much action.
So, the characters.
I have to admit to looking up there names; and I totally don't know any of the actors and am missing significance there, I bet. So, we got two triangles.
First, the students. Stephen--tall, dark, handsome, intelligent, restrained, possibly out of reach and am I right in thinking he's somewhat upper class? Abby--cute as a button, vivacious, fun loving, smart but holding a torch for Stephen. Connor--he reminds me of Xander; he's not as bright as everyone else but he has excellent reflexes and even though he's a clown, he's brave. And he's holding a torch for Abby, not to mention he's saved her life at least twice. Connor and Abby are a fun couple and are actually the two characters I care anything for.
At this point in the series, I'm wondering about how the story will unfold. If it were a Yank producton, I believe Abby would choose the common Connor. His bravery and repeated saving of her life would eventually turn her head and make her notice his real worth, not be taken with the veneer of Stephen and his status. But since this is an British production, I'm wondering if the cultural expectations are different. Is it expected that Abby will end up with Stephen?
The second triangle is the older, 'Upstairs' characters. Nick, totally emotionally crippled by Helen's abandonment must chose between the Claudia, who believes in Good and Doing The Right Thing and is nurturing and Cares. Helen, is...worryingly detached, doesn't care if people die and completely selfish. She very in touch with her animalistic side. Nick must chose--the dignity of humanity or HOT monkey sex. I rather think Nick is an idiot (it's only ep four though) but I'm sure this is written by guys. They probably think a hot, predatory female prowling about, skinny dipping is the hands down winner. :::sigh:::
I guess I'll just have to keep watching to see what happens. It's just a soap with dinosaurs at this point. I could not believe my eyes when Nick confronted Helen millions of years in the past and surrounded by small but dangerous dinosaurs and all he could do was ask 'why did you leave?!' Yeah, it's a soap.
So, my British buddies, I don't mind spoilers. Do these triangles percolate along for the duration? Anyone gonna tell me who ends up with who? Abby and Nick?? *g* And what was that spoiler that Lex (I think) said about B7.... *g* Tell me! I'll still watch it but really, it's just diverting and a bit funny. Spoilers won't ruin it for me.
