tenayaIn tonight's episode, nothing much of consequence happens but our heroines make a few poor--and embarrassing to admit--decisions. Friends probably won't want to read this; good friends and acquaintances will want to read this to be able to mock me at a later date.
Garage Guy didn't go to work because he's coming down with a cold. He came in to give us a couple of gifts that belonged to his mom; a cat incense burner and small, framed photo that features cats. We invited him to share our dinner. While he was in, I somehow ended up showing him ebay. I know, I know...I'm an idiot. And, you have no idea how much it pains me to admit this, but, I placed two bids for him on his fannish obsessions. The auctions are up in 3 days and he agreed to pay me in cash. Just shoot me now.
He says that he pressed his landlord about moving in, and got the guy to say in 10 days. He says his boss has said he can move into the garage of one of the halfway houses we works at (the one where the incident occured), but he is reluctant because it doesn't have drywall like ours does, and therefore it's quite a bit colder. It's been down to freezing the last couple of nights. On the flip side, Mom said he was asking about our 'spare bedroom' and mentioning how cold it is out in the garage. There, you've spotted it, too, right? Our garage is too cold to stay in, except when the alternative is the other place, then our garage isn't that cold. When we were doing the ebay thing, I asked him how much he wanted to bid, and said, "Surely you've got a lot of your paycheck left, right?" thinking he might open up about his financial state. He just looked at me and changed the subject. He says he's keen to get back to the old J, and leave his "self medicating" days behind. Also, mom said when he used our phone today, she noted how he was all robust and cheerful when talking to Landlord To Be, then during the next call, suddenly became a whiney teenager when asking for a sick day.
So, even though it pains me to admit this--again--Mom and I have talked about extending his stay to the Saturday he says he can move into the new place. That would be a five day extention to the 11th. I've got it off and can move him out to where ever on that day. The opportunity to discuss this didn't come up last night, so we've just left it for now. I just wish I could see this new place or talk to the landlord to be sure he exists. I've seen manipulators before and I know how skilled they are at reading a person and telling that person exactly what they need to hear to be most sympathetic. I'm 60% sure it's a con job, well, let me rephrase that and say I'm 100% sure it's a con job on some level, but still have some doubts about how major this whole thing is.
This is kind of like watching an accident in slow motion, isn't it?
