Another raccoon
Dec. 29th, 2004 11:27 pmI was chatting on the phone with a friend when we suddenly realized there was a raccoon at the sliding glass door staring very intently at us. I thought, "that must be Cutiepie, the raccoon momma" and hurried over to throw some kibble out to her. It's been raining for a few days and with no critters coming by due to dog smell, I haven't been putting food out (it just turns to cream of wheat.) The kibble bag is kept right next to the door and as I bent over to get a big scoop of food, the raccoon stood up on its hind legs and pressed his front feet against the glass and really stared at me with a fretful look, and that's when I saw there was only one front paw inches from me. It was the three-legged raccoon, back again. My theory is that he is Cutiepie's unlucky brother as he's been coming by as long as she has, the the pair of them as youngster were very relaxed around us. Anyway, he munched for about 10 minutes before he left and a skunk took his place.
And Brindle, who was AWOL for 24 hours when the weather was storming very hard, also came home tonight. He was quite hungry and he needed to be cooed over severely, and he also smelt faintly like ginger and/or cloves. Where ever he weathered out the wind and rain, he's not telling and we are just grateful to have him back. His skin is bothering him again (he'll have to go back to the vets) and he complained at length that he needed to go out again, but we were firm and now he's asleep on Mom's lap with Scooter. There is much snoring going on. All is right in this tiny little corner of the world and that helps as we watch the terrible images on the TV. When something that big and terrible happens to so many people, I can't help but feel like we dodged a bullet and be very, very thankful for however long we have here.
