I watched a couple of SGA then a SG-1 and as the show began, it occured to me how much more lusher and solid feeling the original show it. Even though it was Gemini and I wasn't too taken by the plot, I realized how much more substance it had. Is it because the I know that the heavy concrete of SGC is feet thick and cool to the touch, the military weapons having the heft and oiled smelled of real weapons? I can imagine the recycled air, the way that sound is different when one is in a mine or a cave, the smells of my local military surplus store. And the Stargate is so wonderfully ancient, those mysterious glyphs carved into the living rock/naquada.

SGA is all alien. The gate is rubber and decorated with a disappointing inconspicuous display of those same glyphs. Atlantis is space and light and artificial materials. As a result, the show feels like a cheap knockoff of the real thing. My thoughts about the substance of the show is only two characters that have made me want to watch further are Rodney and Carson. I dislike the Wraiths and I feel the plots have not been that intriguing (thought Storm, Eye, Defiant One has showed some improvement.) But the look and feel of a show is pretty important too. I think the choices to make the set look slick, modern and completely different from the original show have cost them some of the weight and substance that comes naturally to SG: SG-1.
