"Congress must establish an independent Katrina Commission, modeled after the 9/11 Commission, to unflinchingly assess the failures and successes of government responses to the disaster and make us safe."

And this is quite an illuminating article from Newsweek:
How Bush Blew It

I think the most stunning knock-me-back-on-my-ass information was that Bush doesn't read the papers or watch the news. "He prides himself in ignoring the distracting chatter, the caterwauling of the media elites, the Washington political buzz machine." As a result, he truly was clueless about what was going on at the Gulf Coast. His lackies, in a dither about how to bring this to his attention, made a dvd from the news and gave it to him to watch while in Air Force One while they did that flyby on his way back to DC on Thursday. No one tells him bad news, so he truly thought things were going swimmingly while more people died of neglect.

I'm speechless with frustration, so I'll say no more, except GO SIGN THAT PETITION if you're a US citizen!

I signed it.

I always figured Bush had his cronies feeding him a bunch of crap. That pretty much spells it out. Unbelievable. That man really is just a pawn in the grand scheme of things. Makes me almost feel sorry for the man... almost.

I've sent mine...

Yeah, I know what you mean. How can a man be so in dark? Because he equates disaggreement with disloyality and has gotten rid of anyone who has a mind of their own. I'm now under the impression Bush and his appointees are just playing dress up and collecting their paychecks without expecting to actually *be doing* anything. I'm sure he's never heard of "ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country."

I agree! At this point I don't think he even really cares anymore. He got what he wanted, which was money and oil, and revenge for his daddy, so what does it matter any more.

Jeez.

I heard that 2 - 3 years ago. He was bragging he never reads the newspapers; that his staff informs him of anything that's important. And he apparently has such a volcanic temper that everyone is afraid to give him bad news.

For awhile I've been comparing his obsession about Iraq to Ahab and Moby Dick.

I remember hearing he didn't read the paper, but I foolishly assumed that meant he didn't read it regularly, or he'd have someone else cull the papers for him as a time saver. Never in my wildest dreams did I believe he'd isolate himself so completely from the rest of the country/world. I've assumed he had a pissy temperment since so much of his personality is like a spoiled little boy.

But your comparison of Ahab/Moby Dick is SO right on the money! Very disturbing.
