Federal taxes on Social Security?
Jan. 24th, 2006 11:07 amMom just showed me something she recieved from the Social Security Administration. It states after deductions for Medicare, she will get $499/month. It also states she has not elected to have federal taxes taken out, voluntarily. Which pretty much says that next year she will be required to pay Federal income tax on her income of less than $6,000 for the year. WTF?!
This is so typical! Bush gets tax cuts for the very rich, meanwhile they will be taxing SS income? Actually, she just showed me another paper than indicated if her total income was over $25,000 she would have to pay taxes. Now, isn't that a lovely taxpayer for Bush? If you make $25,000 and are retired (but aren't a member of the Very Rich) then you need to get off your affluent fat asses and pay your share! Mom just stormed out of the room muttering that Bush is a traitor and that he cares nothing for the people, only his rich friends.
Bush has turned the U.S. upside down in only 5 years. Who could have imagined such drastic changes on all fronts in so short a time?

Date: 2006-01-25 05:56 am (UTC)I'm the office manager of an income tax prep office, and over the last year or so people have been coming in asking, "where's my tax cut?" The reality is, unless you're in the top 10% of the population, no tax cut for you. (Well, it's more complicated than that, depending on income/expenses/filing status, but that's really the bottom line.)

Date: 2006-01-25 06:44 am (UTC)CA State will not tax "Sick pay under the Federal Insurance Contributions Act." I've googled this everywhere - and found nothing. It does not seem to be SSDI, because there is another line for that that Turbotax filled in.

Date: 2006-01-25 05:28 pm (UTC)My great-aunt is 70 years old, on SS, and is working in a factory to make ends meet. She hasn't been to a doctor in as long as I can remember, but is constantly being gouged by Medicare deductions she doesn't benefit from because SS told her she needed to 'sign up now or the premiums will go up' ... and they did anyway--more than once!
