First, a little story I forgot about Andee Fizzell, Wraith Hive Queen. And it's a spoiler for a ep not yet aired, Submersion.
In the episode, the Wraith Queen pops up from beneath the water. It used to take her 8 hours to have the make up applied, but now only about five and they've made the appliances from foam. So, there's this 50 pound weight at the bottom of a container. She's to get in, crouch down, hold on to the weight and they slowly surface for the camera. So, she goes down and suddenly realizes that the foam is air filled and the stuff is trying to pull her up. Because it's glued down, the stuff pulls on her skin and it feels like her face is trying to come off. Her big wig also is trying to surface without her. Her costume is giving her a big wedgy. Finally, the 50 pound weight starts to bounce off the floor from her new buoyancy. They finally give the drum a kick and she does her best to surface looking sinister, which thankfully does work. The next day, she notices big red hickies about her neck from where stuff was glued on to her.
Saturday, and yes, there are spoilers:
My roommate dropped me off at the hotel in time for my set tour. It was pretty much the same as last year's with a few differences. We had Martin Gero as a guide as he has a much louder voice and with such a big crowd, you can hear him. We went to the Atlantis set and still weren't allowed in to Weir's office. This Stargate is so much pretty in person; I don't know why it looks so cheap on the show. They had it lit up and cycling through the different glyphs. The Blade Three set had some activity down below with carpenters building something. The village set was half and half. Half was still the medieval village (down near the inn/bar building) and the other half was like a desert ruin with fallen blocks tumbled about. Everything was sand colored but they said they weren't down painting it yet. This year's photo was of the fan at the controls of the puddle jumper. I wish they would let us know in advance so we could have a little fun with it if we wanted.
The SG1 set was still all there, all together as far as I could see. I didn't go down the corridor where Daniel office/Carter's lab was. Besides, they had one of Daniel's bookshelves at the con. It took so long to get the photos done (they shut the door to the cabin behind each photo--there was a man outside the jumper moving a large lever up and down to work the door) they let the group split in two and they took the first half to the SGC where we got to run around the gate room to our hearts content and lots of photos were taken. I went through the gate (heh heh heh) and looked at the backside to find it's decorated there, too. Not as intricate, but still that was a nice surprise. We were then taken up through the control room and then to the briefing room. They let us into the general's office, we we snapped more photos. I did the 'things are serious' with my hand on the red phone. I took a photo of another fan with her legs propped up on the desk, red handset to her ear. Great photo! Anyway, some folks had told me they had taken down the SGC right after shooting ended so I was glad to see it all still there.
At some point, they had the Daedalus set there and a figure 8 of corridors so they can film a walk and talk and just keep going as long as the script called for. I think it was where the cave set was? We sure didn't see the cave set at all, so maybe they've down all their cave scripts of now. *g*
And that was about it for the tour. It's a good 90 minutes, but you do have to keep moving to see it all.
Back at the Hilton, Steve Bacic was on first and he was delightful. He spotted this big ornate chair and immediately planted himself on it and looked lordly. I really can't remember any details (non-note taker here) but he was quite funny. One woman wanted him to remove his shirt and he said he'd do it if $1000 was raised for Make a Wish. Immediately, the hat was passed and about $900 was raised, about half in American which was close enough. Very coyly, he started to unbutton and slipped behind that chair. Eventually, off it came and he pranced about for a bit.
I left when the video game people came out. I'm still pissed that the original game was abandoned in favor of this subscription game. They're too damn greedy.
Rob Cooper was next. He read the opening few pages for one of the DVD movies. It involved three people with names like Altarian Woman Number One and they just talked about leaving for somewhere else. I was confused, thinking this was the opening for The Rising (I think.) In any case, I really wasn't impressed. Three strangers talking about something hidden by a reveal so, why should I care? As for questions, he was being cagey and was full of "can't say" or Nos. As for SGA guest stares, yes to Teal'c, no for Daniel. They've not decided on Jack yet. My gut impression is he thinks he too sophisticated for Stargate and doesn't respect and is dismissive of fans. I can't remember if he said, but I'm left with the impression that once the surprise of SG1's cancellation left, he was okay with the lesser work load and the chance to make movies instead.
About his directing Unending with regards to the CCR song for the montage, the song came on while he was shopping and thinking about what would work, and then the song kept popping up. It was a hard sell this song to some of the other producers as it was too different from what they've done in the past, plus it's expensive to buy the rights to a song. (but since he's showrunner and the director, I guess money was no object. I wonder if the song will stay on the DVD? Wiseguy used two popular songs and replaced them on the DVDs with original stuff).
As a joke at the end of his talk, he motioned forward the innocent young lady who had asked a question about the movie and as a reward, gave her the script he'd read from asking for a promise not to revel the ending. She was in awe. Then he flipped through the script, displaying that all the rest of the pages were blank. It seemed rather cruel to me.
Now, N. John Smith is a totally different fish altogether. He was respectful and eager to help. If there are beans to be split, he's the one that'll do it. Now, he gave the tour on Sunday and I'm not sure anymore which day he told these tidbits. He mentioned a fan who was retired from the Navy plunked down a photo of a submarine two years ago at this very con and had an intriguing proposition for him. Since then, BW, RDA and others got a tour of a Los Angeles class sub last year, and BW was then able to write some scenes. There was a meeting in which it was discussed what it would mean to shoot in the Arctic. NJS could see Chris Judge was anxious and after the meeting, so he pulled him aside and said if he really didn't want to go, he didn't have to. CJ was very relieved. NJS said he knew CJ would go if asked, but he didn't want to put someone through that if they were unwilling. He'd been golfing with CJ when bears had come about and well, CJ really doesn't like bears. Anyway, a few months ago everyone had to attend classes on how to survive up there. It was minus 82 (?) 4 weeks ago which is cold enough to cause frostbite in 5 minutes to exposed skin. Two weeks ago it was -50something. There is a sub up there that they will be filming going up through the ice and back down. There is also a British sub that suffered an accident last week with a fatality. Maneuvers up there only happen every two years. There is press up there from the Brits and from the military news, plus they are sending live feeds to Entertainment tonight. They will live in huts that have two layers of plywood with an inch of insulation in between and are heated by a stove. The temp will be -20 at the floor and 72 up at head level. They invited too many people up there for the life experience so when he flies up there the day after the con, he and Martin Wood will live in a tent. The temperature will be about the same but it won't be secure against polar bears. He said that they all will have to help out and cut blue ice (salt free) drag it to the stoves and melt it for their drinking and washing up water. One has to drink continually as it is so dry up there. He also said he was very motivated to make the set tours even better next year and he seemed so pleased that we all loved the show so much.
Next was David Hewlett, Jane Loughman and John Lenic. They showed a teaser for A DOG’S BREAKFAST. I'm sure the SGA fans will have capture this talk with detail (must find those reports...) He did ask if anyone here had been standing in the rain yesterday for the Save Carson Beckett demonstration (well, obviously they are the ones shaking with fever!) He was delightful as always. He is such a fast thinking and always making jokes.
Teryl Rothery, Carmen Argenziano and Cliff Simon were on last. Teryl is a fire cracker. She is masterful in her control of the audience and she had us squealing with laughter. Someone wanted Cliff to take off his shirt and he said he'd do it for the same amount for Make a Wish. Teryl got out there and was collecting the money and stuffing it down her cleavage. In the end, they got over $1300 I believe. And Carmen took off his shirt too, preening just as much as Cliff did. Next, someone had missed the cabaret and wanted Teryl to sing a few bars but she doesn't do anything by half. She got a male audience member to go up on stage and sit in the ornate chair (Cliff rearranged him so he was slouched sexily on it.) They she got the audio guy to play the music for Big Spender. She belted out that song and shimmied and wiggled about in a most incendiary manner. Carmen was open mouth disbelieving about what a hot mama Teryl was, while Cliff looked on with an appreciative smile. She's quite a presence!
I didn't get their autographs, nor did I go to the desert thing that night as I had an EARLY day in the morning and it was a big day, too.
More tomorrow.
