I didn't like Hermione much in the early books but I really like how she grew up. I did kinda wonder at JKR's choice of an otter for her though. She's so serious usually.

Hermione tends to annoy me quite often -- though not as much as Harry. ;)

My main problems with her revolve around what most likely kept her out of Ravenclaw: she has intelligence, but no common sense and she simply cannot think outside the box.

Definitely don't see her as an otter, maybe there's some sentimental meaning there, as with Harry and Prongs or Severus with {insert spoilery description here ;)] *shrug*

My knee jerk reaction was that JKR intrinsically thinks that girls are all sweetness and light. I was encourage by Hermione and Ginny's strength in book 5, but disappointed in book 7.
