Harbor seal here, not hypervigilance
Aug. 4th, 2007 08:35 pmSo, it appears there are two items on the agenda that people are upset about.
Problem:
First, I haven't seen the HP art in question. I did see where My Space pulled off over 29,000 registered sex offenders who were stupid enough to use their own name. There's fandom and then there's dangerous people out there. Did I mention I came into fandom when it was all underground and subversive? I don't know what the answer is to the chan HP stuff. It's not my fandom. I'm sure they'll figure it out.
Plan of action:
And because I feel entitlement to my pseud, I've got space at both InsaneJournal and GreatestJournal under the same name. I have found a handful of you over there and have friended you. But, until everybody else leaves or LJ bans me, I'm staying here. Harbor seal here. Lazy.
Problem:
Second, I've read some essays about racism and racial inequality in fandom. Again, too complex for me to fix. We're kinda preaching to the choir here, anyway.
Plan of action:
:::shush::: I'm writing a story with a black man in it. And he's getting some action. And he's as sexy as hell.
From a very rough draft of a WIP, a post-Threads sequel to some other story:
“Allow me to be the first to nourish you, Daniel Jackson.” His lips closed over Daniel’s fingers and he sucked the fruit into his mouth. Mesmerized, Daniel watched as he leaned closer, Teal’c’s hand cupping his chin and tilting him upwards. Their lips met and he eagerly deepened the kiss. Bright, tart flavor exploded into his mouth as Teal’c’s tongue claimed his own. Juice and pulp flowed into his mouth as their jaws and tongues worked together, sharing the fruit back and forth until finally, they had to swallow and part. Teal’c lingered to lick a piece of pulp from the Daniel’s chin.
Across the table, Jack was chewed thoughtfully. He swallowed and asked curiously, “Who ended up with that, anyway?”

Date: 2007-08-05 10:40 am (UTC)For me the bigger problem here seems to be that the banning of people is without any kind of process (it's looking like it's ban first, ask questions never), without any opportunity for people to comply with the directions of lj abuse, and it's apparently completely arbitrary and inconsistently applied.
Someone from lj-abuse has stated that they banned this user for life on the basis of a single picture that they and a group of their fellow lj-abuse folks decided had no artistic merit balancing out its sexual content. Clearly these folks need to be recruited for the judiciary, since the US courts struggle to decide whether things are obscene or not and lj-abuse find it such a snap.
Sure lj have the right to run things however they want, but their customer service leaves much to be desired when it comes to a) communicating with their customers (us!) about what's acceptable and what isn't, and b) acting in a consistent manner, while communicating with their customers about what they're doing and why.
Meanwhile, please write more smutty!Teal'c, since at least he's safe in terms of age, though I think us copyright infringers need to watch our backs more because we'll be next...

Date: 2007-08-05 08:06 pm (UTC)The problem is bigger than that. The traitor currently inhabiting the office of President of the US is doing the same thing to real people, but throwing them in jail and torturing them. And no one in this country is doing a damn thing about it. It's the new black. My country is on the decline. The experiment it over. Say "bye-bye."
It's not right what LJ did but since "hey, everyone else is doing it!" I doubt this is currently a battle we can win. Maybe they could fight it legally, but fans are poor and the risks are great. I read the TOS of InsaneJournal and thought there isn't much difference. If someone decides to shine the light of God on the evilness of fandom over in one of the other journal sites, I'm betting they'll belly up, too. Jail? Fines? Losing the house? :::shrugs:::
I would like if LJ was more communicative and open to dialogs with the bouncees, so totally agree with you there.
When fandom stepped into the limelight and started to display their wares for all to see, I thought that was a dodgy idea. Same deal with us copyright infringers. I think posting vids on the net is very dodgy, but it seems to be going alright for the moment. As for the fanfic, there's a history of disinterest by the PTB so, for the moment, we're okay.
Teal'c is over 100. I might get in trouble for elder abuse. But I'm willing to chance it. Teal'c just gave me a look that said "no one is taking away his Daniel!toy!"
Yes, the situation is so bad I'm burying my head in creating new smut. :::sigh:::

Date: 2007-08-05 10:27 pm (UTC)However, be that as it may, I'm staying in LJ just to continue to piss them off.
Now, where is the rest of that story?! I can't wait to read it.

Date: 2007-08-06 12:21 am (UTC)It is censorship but in the current atmosphere? I'm not surprised.
Story is being written. Thanks for being interested. :)

Date: 2007-08-06 12:35 am (UTC)Oh yeah, I definitely want to see this story when you're done with it...*stares at LJ, waiting for spontaneous fic'ing.*

Date: 2007-08-06 02:50 pm (UTC)The fact that those people ignore the facts and go with their gut and truthiness allows them to light up the torches and execute any agenda they want. Meanwhile the trusting continue to be victimized but that doesn't really matter when they can harass gays. :::sigh:::

Date: 2007-08-05 11:02 pm (UTC)As far as Greatestjournal, I'm over there, too. But one of my other flist read their Terms of Service and they're even more restrictive than lj. No cursing, smut, nudity, etc. Banned right at the beginning (apparently) if someone complains.
I sure hope we don't have to go back to zines! I love them, but I figure I'm reading at LEAST two zines full of stories every week on lj, if not more. Like you, though, I'll probably stick around here as long as *I* don't get deleted.

Date: 2007-08-06 12:22 am (UTC)Sorry to here about GJ.
Agree about the consumption of free stories. We'll figure something out if it gets bad.

Date: 2007-08-06 01:06 am (UTC)The other artist's picture I haven't seen, but it was Fred/George. They were supposed to be in their 20s, but one of them was wearing a Hogwarts tie, so maybe LJ was fooled by the school uniform. They also deleted this woman's recipe journal. No fudge brownies for YOU, fandom!

Date: 2007-08-06 03:11 pm (UTC)I'd have to say Harry looks underage. His musculature, the sparse pubic hair, the smallness of his frame. I'd say he's about 14-15. Definitely not 18.
I'd like to slap LJ for how they handled this. I guess we need a company that isn't under the laws of the US. Would that make a difference? Honestly, until we change the country, stuff like this will continue. And even AFTER we get out from under the Fundies, they will still be politically active and looking for stuff like this to shout about. HP fandom needs to figure out a way of protecting their stuff from prying eyes.
And just cause I want to be sure I've got my terms right, I thought chan was sex between an adult and a minor. Is that right?

Date: 2007-08-06 04:53 am (UTC)I don't know what the heck to do. I would love to just stay here, but it actually does seem like the LJ admins are getting crazier and crazier. It just doesn't make sense, if they really do want to keep fandom at LJ, not to give the artist or the comm the opportunity to take offending material down. I mean...you don't execute someone for stealing a car. Stealing a car is wrong and the person is 'punished' in some way, but you don't go right for the max after one offense.
I have an account at GJ because my main fannish comm here has a sister comm at GJ. I also just got an account at Journalfen, because I figured that if GJ goes the way of LJ (I had already noticed that GJ's TOS is more hard-assed than LJs), the site least likely to bounce anyone for anything is Journalfen. It's pretty damn hard to even navigate or find anything when you're a member, lol, so it must be really difficult for a non-member to find anything.
I too have written, and will write again, fic featuring a black character, since there is one very hot black actor in my fandom. Fans self.

Date: 2007-08-06 04:53 pm (UTC)Mainly because I'm not sure they see the difference between child porn and stories that deal with adults who have been abused. Sigh.
