It's too damn hot.

I got out of work today at 6:30am and it was warm. I washed my filthy car and when I stopped to buy a few groceries, people were already whispering with awe, "it's already hot!" People in the donut shop were sweating (saw a food network program on donuts and that itch just had to be scratched, you know?) By the time I went to bed at 8:45, it was already over 90 and too humid.

Whine, whine, whine, bitch, bitch, bitch. If you think I'm bad, you should see Brindle the cat. He went out the other night at 9pm and was panting from the heat. He went out this morning to help Mom water a few plants. I left in out for an hour, then called. He came running, panting. He wants to be out but he's miserable. I picked him up and took him in. He hissed at me yet was leaning towards the door. He's very confused.

Um, we went to the Getty Villa on Thursday. It was in the mid-70s there and gorgeous. I'll post some photos later. I would love to go there and just lounge about all day. I did enjoyed the exhibits, said goodbye to a few lovely pieces that will have to go back to Italy, had a very good but slightly strange "burger" (or how a hamburger would have been made back in ancient Rome was what I think they were going for) and marveled at their security and how they earthquaked-proof all those priceless bits. For security, a guard came out of nowhere and very nicely told this guest with a tripod he'd have to check it in at the desk, then stepped into the next room and reported in on his radio the exchange. After that, I noticed the little cameras, the guards and other things. I've always loved floors and ceilings. Halfway through the museum, I noticed the guards noticing me. I think one is not supposed to take notice of the security, and certainly not study the ceilings. Oops.

That trip down there was why I had to wash the car. We'd had a little thunderstorm sprinkle the night before we left and the car was filthy! Dusty with big rain splatters. The Villa is in Malibu and we took Sunset to the 405, which is a road traveled by the rich and powerful. Nothing but BMWs, Jags, Audis, Benz and other expensive cars and they were all gleaming, with their owners all on their cell phones with their Hollywood hair. And then there was my poor dirty car. We had fun sitting in the traffic guessing whether the people were bankers, studio execs or whatever. The best one was this guy in a yellow convertible with flowing yellow curly hair, and cell phone. A man with a mid-life crisis if ever I saw one. And btw, just because you can keep your car freshly waxed doesn't mean you know how to drive.

But I digress.

So, I plan on continuing to cower inside the house. I should write some. Should I do that, more commentaries or continue to read a SG1 mpreg story? It's really long and, no offense to those that like them, it's like watching a slow motion train wreck. This was rec'ed to me because I hadn't ever read a mpreg before. I can safely say it's not my cup of tea, but I'm finding I have to finish it. I, I, I...am slightly horrified by it. One likes to think there are limits you know, and sometimes this story gaily soars past something I would have said was a 'oh, don't even go there! moment. I think I'm a wuss....

Woe!

Wow, you ate the burger-thing. You are braver than I am! You are also lucky, because I wanted to see the Herculaneum Women exhibit and I couldn't get a reservation, and this is the last weekend.

It's miserable on my side of town too, though not as bad as where you are. I went to Fiesta Hermosa today and it was 87 degrees in Hermosa and Manhattan. Uck. It's after 10 p.m. and it's still over 80 in my living room.

Wanting to write fic, but can't take the heat.

SG mpreg? *shudders* The only one I ever found worth reading was the Altar series and even it's not one I'd likely recommend to anyone who's not already a major mpreg fan.

I can name some great ones, but none are in SG fandom.

You're in luck. Greeks on the Black Sea ended on Sept 3, but the Herculaneum Women are there until Oct. 13 of 2008. Yay!

I'd remembered what you said about the food but there was no menu we could see. So, Mom asked for what type of sandwiches then had and he said burgers and chicken. We got one of each which was WAY too much food. Both were interesting and actually quite tasty.

So, does this mean you're a mpreg fan? The Altar series, dare I ask for a URL? The one I'm reading has a lot of detail. I know it's wrong to assume that a writer is writing about their own experiences, but I can't help but wonder that. Is this some attempt to validate their domestic experiences by grafting them onto the heroes of the show? Daniel may have been died many times and been though all sort of emotionally devastating experiences but all paled compared to the final month of pregnancy. I don't know but I'll be reading more of it tonight. :::sigh:::

Sorry to hear about the heat. I hate, hate, hate summer with a passion undying!!!

I did my own rant against mpreg in my GJ a while back. The only reason I can see for it is revenge against men. However, it won't make me write one.

Did I tell you I hate summer?

Oh yeah, I'm a big fan of mpreg -- well, GOOD mpreg anyway and it has to be in a fandom where there is a loophole: aliens, elves, magic, etc. LOL

Fortunately, there are several good ones to be found in LotR, SW:tPM and HP fandoms, but last I checked the same couldn't be said for SG.

The Altar Series is here: http://area52hkh.net/author.php?name=Nessessitee&sortby=Series&sortorder=Title

You have to scroll a little past halfway down the screen to find it. 3 parts. I haven't read it in ages, so I make no guarantees. I just remember it being the only mpreg I could read in that fandom.

I don't know how much you are into HP or your pairing preference, but if you're really curious and want an example of a well done mpreg, these are two of my favorites (both are Lupin/Snape): Of Mutual Benefit by Ellid and Gift of the Magus by McKay and Arionrhod. The second is a bit angstier in nature than the first.

Me, too! Me, too! I really, really hate summer. I spend all spring dreading summer, and all summer just existing in a limbo trying to survive.

I'd like to read that rant. It was in Greatest Journal? I didn't find it but maybe I'm not in the right place.

Revenge against men. I think I've not read enough of them. I have to say it's embarrassing to the guys to be cast as fairly whiny. Pregnant women aren't that whiny.

Hey! Did you hear? It's September! The month that summer ends! Joy!!

I'm an Mpreg fan, but the preggie one has to be my guy (Daniel, Sam). There are some good ones in SPN... and some bad ones *G*

It's hot up here, too. In the 80's. I'm miserable.

Unfortunately, summer around here never ends when it's supposed to. *Slaps summer silly and tells it to get with the program.* Of course, the fun in this area is that September is primo hurricane time and we've got some thing sitting off the coast. What a thrill! Not to mention Felix, though he's mainly going to be the Yucatan's problem.

Rant is here

So, since you're not a Wincest fan, then that means that Sam is impregnated by...demons and such? That sounds kinda icky scary. Are they?

I'm sorry you're miserable, but 80s would be a godsend for us. *g* And here Mom and I have been fantasing about how cool and wonderful Lompoc is right now.

Maryland - 30 miles outside DC.

We don't see too many actual hurricanes around here. We just usually get the aftermath if it hits the US. The last one that really got this area was Isabel in 2003. My town was the only place in about 20 miles that had power after she blew through. Downed trees all over the place. Trying to get out of town was...interesting.

But things hanging off the coast usually smack into NC and we end up getting very wet.

Well, I mis-remembered - it's both exhibits I wanted to see, and I was disappointed not to be able to see the Greeks on the Black Sea one, because it sounded like there were a lot of artifacts. Did you enjoy that bit?

I suspect that they may (yay!) have changed the menu. I would swear they had vastly improved the menu when I went to the "other Getty" *g* a couple of weekends ago - it seemed to me like there were twice as many choices, and the food was delicious. So it would be nice to think they went less gimmicky at the Villa too, with more food people would actually want to eat.

You do recognize my icon? ;-)

NP Having read one too many of the truly awful mpregs out there, I'm glad to be of some assistance.

Unfortunately it's a genre with very little middle ground. I've read a few that weren't great, but weren't too terrible either, but overall it tends to be a matter of either really, really good or really, really awful.

I doubt I'd even attempt writing one as I'm not sure I could do it right myself.

Revenge against men? 0_o Not in any I've ever read, though I guess there could be some of that out there somewhere among the [unfortunately too many] poorly written ones. I personally don't see the point in using it as revenge, since that would be putting yourself down as a woman in the process, but who knows.

No, I don't recognize the icon. Tell!

I did enjoy the Black Sea stuff. There were a couple of pieces that were amazing.

I see they have a new exhibit of Roman glass coming up next month. Quit drooling. *g*

We did score a menu after we'd ordered and there were lots of wonderful sounding stuff. We'll go again and try something different.

A lot of women do tend to put themselves down, but I was thinking more of the "hee, hee, now you'll get yours" type of revenge where someone gets their comeuppance more than anything else.

As you walk from the front of the museum, up the stairs and into the area where the shop and elevators are, you will find "my lady". Her eyes have always fascinated me. I have nicknamed her "spooky chick". I use her as kind of a WTF?! icon ;-)
