And my favorite piece:

And notice the fine silver filament around the right elbow and below the right knee -- earthquake proofing.

I went to the villa the week before I left the area. I loved it! The "remodel" was a terrific idea and well worth waiting for, I think.

My favorite piece, this trip, was a wall painting of Bacchus and Ariadne, two of my favorite gods hanging out together!

Hmm...I remember a a painting that had them and maybe a satyr, too? Could I have missed something?! So, you're a party girl? *g*

That piece is one of my favorites, too. So delicate. I love small, intricate things generally, in the Egyptian museums as well. And shoes. I can also stare at the Roman glass at the Villa for hours.

Now, I think the glass is pretty but hours? What is it that you see that I'm overlooking? I've never really gotten glass for some reason.

The colors, and just the idea that such beautiful, and sometimes such 'modern looking' items were made so long ago, by people with much more primitive techniques than are used today.

I have been trying for *ages* to get to the Villa. I've made three reservations (at last count) but each and every time, something comes up, and I can't go! I think I'll do it during schooltime now that school is going back into session.

What's the scale on that particular peice, btw?

Keep trying as it is well worth it and quite relaxing. We got there before 1pm and had plenty of time to see everything at a nice slow speed and have a meal.

That little bronze piece is about 4-5 inches long. He just looks so sad...he makes me think of all the poor souls that have died alone, now and thousands of years ago.
