From Stargate to Atlantis
Jul. 5th, 2004 11:45 pm Very disappointing. A big, big cut of Sam Spam. I mean, it's fine that they have AT host the show; she's sparkly and very up after all. But, after seeing the whole thing, the main issue of Season 8 is all about Sam's love life. It's really sad that that is what they chose to push. I'm adjusting my expectations as I sit here.
Daniel at least had a couple of quick interesting mentions by PDL. Unfortunately, everything segment about MS they showed was uncomplimentary. One or two bits would have been spicy; that all of them were that way is very heavy handed, and certainly doesn't shine a favorable light on the production as a whole. I have the feeling that if there was more to MS's interview, it was cut and replaced by the Conan O'Brian footage, where Daniel is mentioned--by saying the show was better without him. Parody or TPTB getting their feelings out there front and center under the guise of humor? I guess it's all up to personal interpretation.
CJ looked good and I'm looking forward to whatever they will be doing with him. He's just so damn happy to have hair and be able to say some lines! RDA also looked good, seemed relaxed and was enjoyable. Actually, AT and MS also looked good, but the writers did not come off well for various reasons.
Atlantis had nice sets (as they repeatedly raved about) but I was dismayed by how tacky and garish the space vamps were. I really miss the Goa'uld as villians. They were just as uncomplimentary with Sheppard as they were with MS. I wonder what's up? Loved the polite but pointed comeback RDA gave to Flanigan, who said: "Out with the old and in with the new, baby." RDA leans forward to say, "Yeah, talk to me in eight years!" Flanigan came across as rude to say that in front of RDA, and RDA seemed to be indicating that he didn't think Atlantis had any legs at all. Again, a curious way to hype up the new show, the new 'hero.'
So, the Atlantis team was billed as the best there is. And even though that was probably just cheerleading as they were about to go through the Stargate, I, as a viewer was surprised to learn that the franchise obviously thinks SG-1 is past their prime.
Yeah, I tend to side with RDA on this one. Unless they retool Atlantis--again, I'm have grave doubts about it.
Strangely enough, I've heard SG's premeire this Friday is quite good, and I'm really looking forward to going to the SG con this weekend. I've been packing a bunch of SG fanfic in the PDA, and it's so damn handy to pull out and read, just about everywhere where you have to wait. It's a must have for fannish fun.
