Saturday and Sunday I was at the Farscape CreationCon in Burbank and I had a lovely time. My good friend from up north, [livejournal.com profile] feltedhare, came down for it, so it was more of a visit-with-a-friend sort of thing for me. I watched Farscape and loved it but was never fannish about it (nevertheless this was probably my 5th Farscape con. Go figure!) I didn't bring my camera to this event, so no photos. :(

There were some wonderful vids shown, and before each one Adam asked if the vidder was in the audience. He invited them up and gave them a certificate of some kind. It was nice to see the thrill on their faces. :)

The one I liked best was Crichton and D'Argo's Lost Weekend to George Michael's "Outside." There was also an instrumental one that was kind of a series overview that was quite spectacular. I think it was to a Battlestar Gallactic soundtrack song?

The guests that I saw were Wayne Pygram, Gigi Edgely, Anthony Simcoe and Ben Browder. We got to see about 20 minutes of Rockne O'Bannon before we had to split for a quick burger before [livejournal.com profile] feltedhare's plane trip home.

So, from my notes of BB's speech. First off, his hair longer now (vaguely a soft, silky beatle cut) and the first thing he did was smear product in it and rough it up. He had a lot of fun playing about with it through his talk and every now and then he'd take a digital photo of himself to see what it looked like.

Then he got serious and basically gave a eulogy for a fan named Steve Palmer who was The Keeper of John Crichton's Boots.

He mentioned his new project "Going Homer" and said he had forty pages, typed and single space at the moment but that the strike was coming up.

He talked about the recent wild fires. He got a call in the middle of the night and they asked how he was doing. He went to look and saw flames coming over the ridge. He woke up Fran and the kids and went up to water down the roof. "I'm a man; I've got my hose," he said proudly. He told his wife to leave with the kids as he was going to stay and protect the house. He said being married means you do as your wife tells you and she told him to get down, now, and come with them. He met someone that said there was a mandatory evacuation order and he said he was way ahead of them as he'd already had his mandatory evacuation order from the wife. Later, he was telling his agent about how he wanted to stay with the house. The agent said, as a man, I understand that, but as your agent, you wife made the right decision. BB went on with much humor about what you end up taking during an evacuation. Small dogs are better than big dogs, cats are better than small dogs. He mentioned that he has a lot of family photos hanging on the wall and how he'd take out an armful and Fran wanted even more of them and they were filling up the VW.

He mentioned going up in an F-16d, in the backseat with a pilot Scotty (didn't catch the last name) who is number 5 of the Thunderbirds. He said was it unbelievable and no, he didn't throw up. He had nine gs. The guy flew straight up to 12,000 feet then flew upside down. He was hanging upside down by his seat belt and the first thing he noticed was all the dead flies and dirt floating about his head. They did supersonic, spins, loops and 5 point roll turns.

He mentioned his southern accent and how the Farscape people said to keep it, and how the Stargate people said to keep it, they'd keep his character as coming from the South. They liked that it was different from the local Canadian accent, eh. But then he was exasperated that they had his character coming from Kansas and just figured that Canadians thought Kansas was the South.

After last year's con, he took his family to Wyoming. It's November, it's Wyoming and it's a state park; he's in the visitor's center and looks over to see Adam, of Creation standing there with his family! Small world.

He also talked about filming up in the Arctic last spring with Stargate. They were 200 miles off of Prudhoe Bay on a ice flow that moved 35 miles while they were on it. It was so cold that you could toss the contents of a coffee cup in the air and the liquid explodes into ice. It was so cold that toilet paper doesn't work and you have to keep a package of baby wipes next to your skin for when you need it. The men went just outside of camp to pee into a box (?) in the ice. If the wind was blowing from camp it was no problem but if it was blowing the other way, you either risked your manhood or didn't care if you were exposed to those in the camp. Also the ice popped and groaned and with the hoods they wore, they had very decreased visibility and imagined polar bears creeping up on them. Sometimes, the expectation of a polar bear's hot breath didn't seem so bad. He talked about having a survival buddy (his was Martin Wood) and he seemed to be saying that if your hand got frozen to metal, the survival buddy would be the one to pee on it because hot liquid is the thing that worked best to unstick the skin. He mentioned the U.S. Navy submarine USS Alexandria and how it has 135 men and all the officiers are nuclear engineers. Their last deployment was in the Persian Gulf playing hide and seek and they didn't surface for 8 months. He was very impressed by their devotion.

He also says he was a rule and that is never to go out with Chris and Michael because they are younger and party harder. Someone protested that he wasn't that much older and he corrected them and said he was waaaaay older than Shanks. He also said that he and Claudia were the Grim Reapers of Scifi.

In December he'll be going up to Vancouver to see the premier of The Ark of Truth. He said the SG people were very nice to him. He mentioned his third day of shooting and he and Chris were in a room with that had the ceiling lowering down on them. At one point as he crouched down, he looks over and Chris is unbuckling his trousers. Chris then moons the camera but Ben is on the other side and he says things were "impressive."

At that point they were telling him it was time for one more question and he held up his arm and said there was lots of time left. He pointed out the watch was his SG1 watch. He prattled on some more and suddenly on the screen behind him were written the words, "Francesca called and she wants you do get off the stage now!"

He also said he now knows why us fans get all upset and rant on the internet. He's been watching a show called Friday Night Lights. "They ruined my show!" he moans. They had an episode lately where they hit the reset button and that seemed to enrage him.

Anyway, he was very entertaining and funny. And even though he spent a long time on each audience question, he seemed to find it funny that he actually never really answered most of them.

He seemed pleased that there would be another Creation Farscape con next year and seemed to indicate that he'd be there.

ETA: I almost forgot I nearly got a hug from him. Ben phoned his wife so we could all shout a hello to Francesca and tell her we missed her. She was so touched she told her husband to give everyone a hug. Everyone? Everyone! So he started on the front row and gave about three hugs and stopped just as he got to a big manly man (coincidence? I think not.) Then he walked all the way to the last row where "the shy people are" and started hugging again. I was next in line and if I'd jumped to my feet and scooted over the three empty chairs, I could have probably collected the hug. There was a man dressed in a Crichton outfit that had briefly left in the middle of Ben's talk. He happened to come back in just at the end of the hugs. Ben told him he missed getting a hug because he was gone, but did end up giving him a hug anyway.

Oh, and [livejournal.com profile] deej1957? I got Ben to autograph the book. :)

And lastly, while I was gone, Brindle disappeared for two nights. He came back on Saturday night, and was emotionally needy. In fact, he's still quite needy. He's claimed the bathtub again and pops out for a cuddle whenever anyone goes in the bathroom. He is such a strange cat....
