Brindle still at vets but better
Aug. 19th, 2008 08:56 pmThe bottom line for those that don't want all the details, we visited Brindle tonight and he looks comfortable. Test results aren't back yet and we're to call tomorrow to hear the details.
I stayed up till 7am to call and see how he was doing. No test results were back as yet but they said he was resting comfortably. I finally crashed but Mom was up. She called around 10am and was told his liver enzymes were up and he had a temperature but he wasn't vomiting blood anymore. No, he was passing some in his stool, which, is to be expected I guess. Blood is in the GI tract so it will eventually come out there. We were asked to call tomorrow to have the lab work explained to us by Dr. J. They mentioned the possibility about having an ultrasound exam to look at the liver.
We went to visit him at 5:30pm. They had an emergency with a dog that had probably eaten something poisonous that was causing low blood pressure and heart rate and he was bleeding. The tech had a book of plants that they were showing photos to the people to see if they recognized anything (Lilies of the Valley, hibiscus, oleander were some of the plants I over heard.) I also overheard $2600. The family had a couple of boys with them and the ten year old kept popping up and opening the door for people. Poor little guy.
Anyway, they brought Brindle out to an exam room for our visit. His IV tubing was disconnected and wrapped to his leg. He was wearing a buster collar which, instead of a hard white plastic cone, was a kind of a plasticized cloth cone with stiff edges. I noticed some stippling in it so I would say he probably was trying to get rid of it. He was cleaned of all the blood, and seemed fairly normal. We gave him about 20 minutes of Two Mommy Luving which really relaxed him. He has such abandonment issues we felt he needed to know we hadn't abandoned him. We rubbed our chins on him, kitty language for "mine" hoping he would interpret that to mean he was still our kitty.
After about twenty minutes, he got a little restless. He was looking for his kitty cage to climb in so we'd take him home. When he didn't find that, he moved to the table just below the window. "Come adore me over here while I inconspicuously check out the escape potential of that window." When he started getting annoyed that we weren't breaking him out of there, it was time to go. Hopefully, he'll be more at ease emotionally.
He looked good. I'm hoping to hear "come and get him" tomorrow when we call but who knows. He looked good though. That's a big comfort.

Date: 2008-08-20 06:26 pm (UTC)When all is said and done, it appears that he ate something that disagreed with him and the blood was from vomiting so hard. I can't believe it cost this much, but on the other hand, if we hadn't took him in, how long would he have thrown up? Would the bleeding have gotten worse? Could it have been life threatening? Probably.
Ya see, this is what you're missing by insisting your kitties stay indoors. I'd love to keep him indoors but he's so stubborn, and then he gets violent.

Date: 2008-08-20 08:12 pm (UTC)The evil grey one is still coming round every evening for his dinner, and I don't put any food out until he backs away from the door, he's too scary, and his claws are lightning fast.

Date: 2008-08-20 09:42 pm (UTC)The two sets of new neighbors aren't at all friendly, but one has indoor cats and the other wants to get a big dog, so I figure they probably wouldn't hurt a cat, but then again, they are unfriendly and people are very prone to hurt cats.
We asked how he was behaving last night and the girl went, "well, um...." as she tried to find a way to put a positive spin on it. I'm sure as he has improved, he's back to defending himself from all indignanties. I bet they'll be glad to see him go.
I've not heard about this grey one. What's up? Is he scratching the hand that feeds him? Some cats want nothing to do with people. Brindle was that way at first.
