Damn flying bugs
Oct. 10th, 2004 12:20 amTwo things:
We got new neighbors last May and hadn't met them until yesterday. The young mother was out with her stroller and stopped to talk to mom. Turns out she came down with West Nile Virus in mid- August and was hospitalized for a few weeks with menigitis. She's 30. I know Mom felt a little under the weather about then and had a rash on her leg, so we are wondering if she's been exposed. I had a strange rash on my arms in June I think. We figured it was contact dermitis except I hadn't been around anything new and it didn't itch and I've never had contact dermitits before, so I'm wondering....
The other thing? Thirty flying termites up on the bathroom window wanting out. Shit, shit, shit!! We had Terminex out yesterday. I really didn't care for the man's sales style--a little too sensational and his science was soddy. I don't know whether he was talking down to us silly women or whether he doesn't really understand the difference between diffusion and expansion, or that rats do indeed have skeletons (they may be cartiledge, but it's still a skeleton.) He also said it would be about $2700 (with garage) and avoided answering any questions about square footage. Obviously, we have to get this done, but we have to clear the weeds/grass/vines /trees from around the house first. That may take a bit, and while we hack and dig and pull and slice, we can wonder about getting another estimate.
Oh, it turns out that two of the local hotels allow cats so we'll be able to stay close when the house is tented. I know Brindle, of the loud and whiny voice who gets psychotic if he doesn't get his way IMMEDIATELY (the cat that sliced my face open from eye to jaw the night before I went to Germany) will probably not be hotel friendly. Loud and angry seems more likely. I imagine we'll have to restrain him until they're done tenting the house, then let him loose. We'll come by 3 or 4 times a day to feed and pet him. I doubt he'll try to reenter the house (heck, we can't get him inside now unless it's raining out) but the guy assured us that they put heavy sand bags over the fabric and the gas has a teargas like smell, so, I'm hoping nothing tragic happens. I figure if I put tons of cat kibble up on the berm, that the varmits won't want to get too close to the house either. We've got a month or two of work left to do anyway.
