In The Mentalist tonight, they used the phrase "page six sex scandal." Last night on Castle, the police woman that is flirting with Castle told him something like, "I don't live my person life on Page Six." Castle is supposed to be in NYC, while The Mentalist is in California. I live is California but I don't know what this Page Six refers to. I'd appreciate any clues to help figure it out.

Thanks!

Page Six is the New York Post's gossip column. (But of course New Yorkers think NY is the same thing as the whole US. ;-)

They have celebrity gossip, especially if it's NY-related (so-and-so was at The Four Seasons/spotted in Manhattan/appearing at X NY event last night), but also Hollywood gossip. And they have the NY movers and shakers, too.

I think people who read gossip themselves assume it's a known shorthand? Like a girl with pinup good looks in Britain might be called a Page 3 Girl, because of the ... whichever tabloid it is that puts a cheesecake shot on page 3. Not everybody reads that tabloid but everybody in Britain knows about it. But the London tabloids are distributed far more around the UK than the NY Post is in the US. If I were going to shorthand "gossip," I would reference People or The Enquirer.
