The Mentalist -- Blinking Red Light
Nov. 5th, 2011 07:29 pmIs anyone here watching this show? Spoilers.
Wow! That was chilling. That is certainly proof Jane will stop at very little to achieve his agenda of finding Red John. And I have to say I loved Baker's direction. The use of music was subtle but really added to the show. I'm not fond of the 'gotcha!' reveal. Music supplied the cues that Panzer was the killer, and that Jane watching that blinking red light was significant. By letting the viewer in on the important turning points, our excitement/horror was heightened, which for me is so much better than simple surprise. We got to see Jane decide to use Red John as a weapon to kill another killer, got to see the fabulous acting Baker did in that moment. It was also cold to watch Jane congratulate Panzer, see the excitement in his eyes as he interacted with a man that he knew was all but dead.
The lighting was also very nice though I had to smile at him being unable to resist the film noir of the shadow of the gun holding character on the warehouse wall. But that last final shot was beautifully done. A single shot from the car to the smiley face. Jane never spares a glance at the butchered Panzer; he's all eyes for that smiley face.
Question one, Lisbon knows what he did right? The FBI agent seemed aware, but was she aware Jane caused Panzer to be killed, or was it more that she thought Jane would be shocked to learn that he really hadn't killed Red John in that mall?
And question two is, Red John is so very smart. He must know Jane used him to kill Panzer. Did he get a thrill out of watching Jane kill someone by remote control? He caused Jane to kill his stand-in in the mall. This is twice Jane has killed now.
It is fascinating because Jane is a type of psychopath. But he felt real compassion and empathy as he was watching that father view the dvd of his dead daughter dancing. Such an intriguing show!
