BC vacation photos are up here:
May. 12th, 2005 03:46 pmMy photobucket page
Starting on page 2 is some of the SG con photos. I plan on putting them all up in a different folder tonight.
Also, I like photos of ships, trains, buildings, plants and animals...not so much people. *g* And, I'm still getting used to this and I just don't get why one 100k photo fits nicely in the monitor, and another 100k photo overflows. It's sloppy, but was I getting tired and so I tired of attempting to get them smiliar. I should spend more time trying to understand these programs, but...! At least the bigger photos look prettier.
The vacation report I posted earlier has the details of what the photos are. Mind you, I posted less than a tenth of what I took, so yeah, I did show a little restraint.
I hope you enjoy.

Date: 2005-05-13 02:01 am (UTC)You did the locations tour, or did you do it on your own? A German friend told me that they tried to do some locations on their own, and they were difficult to find.
Is the Capilano bridge worth visiting?
We wanted to visit the Sun Yat Sen Gardens already, Stanley Park, the Queen Elizabeth park and the Museum of Anthropology too, not only because of Stargate but because they're cool places to see. But we also wanted to try find Daniel's apartment and the studio.
The best is that our hotel is the Crowne placa and it's next to the Vancouver Art Gallery and that cafe Daniel, Jack and Sam are in during Foothold. *g*.
We will have two days and a half, I hope it's enough time.
Before that we'll go to Victoria, so the Butchart Gardens are also a must.

Date: 2005-05-13 06:15 am (UTC)Capilano is in North Vancouver and therefore away from the other items on your list, but, it was only about a 15 minute drive from Stanley Park and fairly straightforward to get to (as in well signposted.) It is a tourist trap with a fairly expensive entrance fee. I did enjoy walking across the bridge from a thrills point of view. I went with Mom and she required about an hour on the far side to recover before she plucked up the courage to walk back. *g* There was some cool bridges and walkways up in the trees that we didn't do because there were stairs, and there was a little nature walk where a guide identified the different plants, their histories and uses which I enjoyed. So, as to whether it's worth it, it depends on if you like that type of thing and have the time for it. We went to Stanley park, took our time at the different stops, had a hot dog and coffee lunch, continued to meander at the park until about 2:30. Then we drove over to Capilano, spent a couple hours there, drove back over the bridge, parked in Gastown, spent a few hours shopping and had a pub dinner. You can do a lot in a day.
The Sun Yat Sen Gardens are just a few blocks from Gastown, and Daniel's apt from The Light is at the Stadium/Chinatown stop of the Skytrain, only like 2 blocks from the Gardens. We spent a leisurely 2 hours at the Gardens; you could see the gardens and the apt in that time, easily. Mom wals with a cane and takes frequent rests.
I'm not sure that the Sun Yat Sen Gardens were used in Maternal Instinct. Cathy and Yum@ don't think so either, but it was nice if you like Gardens. Cathy and Yum@ are the real experts with all this and where I got my info.
A plan you might use is to go to the Sun Yat Sen Gardens/Daniel's apt. The Plaza of Nations is just a few blocks from there, too (Bane, 2010.) Drive down to the UBC (we spent about an hour there and that was enough as their collection is small but impressive.) Drive over to Queen Elizabeth Park (an hour is enough time there, two if you want to have lunch at the restaurant there.) Next, drive to Burnaby, pausing at the studio, another 10 minutes north will get you to Daniel's house, and 10 minutes east will take you to Horizons (O'Malleys.) This is a fine dining type of place but we were ready to splurg. Having said that, our meal was $55 Canadian dollars and very, very tasty! The view is fantastic up there. Make reservations (the latest reservation they make is for 8pm, which is about when the sun will be setting in late August.) I'd recommend Horizons as it is excellent by itself (never mind that it was a SG location.) Simon Fraser University is also just a few minutes from Horizons (on the same hill top.) It was used as Tollana.
Sites one block around Bridge Studios are the Sam/Pete coffee shop from Chimera, the liquor store where young Jack tried to get the beer (it's a sushi shop) and possibly the Threads diner (again, I'm not sure that it is.)
Thinking this over, I would advise you moving the trip to UBC to your half day and pairing it with Stanley Park. Double check opening times before you go. You could do all this in a day, and have another day and half for other stuff. I have a bunch of websites if you want them. The diner where Machello and Fred go in Holiday is just a few blocks from your hotel, I think. Jack's cabin is a groundskeeper building on a golf course, but there's a public path right by it. I can find out where it is if you want.
Cut for length.

Date: 2005-05-13 06:16 am (UTC)Are you familiar with Mapquest? I can send you the addresses and you can plug them in, find them, and then mark them down on your own maps. The drivers are very patient and polite, and that makes driving in an unfamiliar area so much nicer. Let me know if you want the urls for UBC and all those other places.
I have to work the next two days, but I'll get back to you on whatever else you need. It's all very exciting and fun!

If you look at the map at the Sun Yat Sen page, you can see how close the skytrain stop is.
Okay, I think I'm scaring myself now so I'll stop. *g* If you have any more questions, just ask.
