MediaWest and Yosemite
Jun. 11th, 2005 02:39 amThe abridged version:
I had a great time at MediaWest. I arrived on Wednesday night, met up with friends and talked into the night about the wonders of Stargate and Master and Commander. My roomies breezed in first thing on Thursday morning. Luckily, as they had been driving all night, they were wanting to take a nap. Yay! Oh, the aging of fandom when a group nap is first on the agenda. *g*
To make a long story short, I bought a lot of zines. We won Best Ongoing Narrative for our Without a Trace door (I had fun making up all the Daniel Jackson missing posters) as it investigated the sudden disappearance of Mary Sue Fanning (a blow up doll that we dressed and took room crawling with us.)
Vids: I enjoyed all of the SG vids I saw.
Panels: The best ones were for Boston Legal and Nip/Tuck. I did go to a few SGA ones, one on Daniel Jackson that was pretty good, and I walked out on another SG1 panel were the moderators stated right off they thought the show should be cancelled. One of those moderators was seen all over the con lobbying that SG1 was terrible and needed to be ended. Why someone would spend their time in such a negative pursuit at MWC is astonishing, but there you go.
Parties: The SG1 party was a full house again and folks seemed to have a good time. I did go to the SGA party and won a zine filled with net stories.
My friends did very well at the FanQs and the vid show, and I beam with pride at their successes.
We stayed over til Tuesday and went shopping at the Meridian Mall. Found a store where I spent the rest of my cash. Fat wallets wear out sooner so this is a good thing, right?
I got home from MW late on Tuesday, and by 2pm on Wednesday, I was driving up to Oakhurst, where we stayed for two nights while we visited the wonder that is Yosemite. Tomorrow, I'll try to post a few photos from that trip. The reason for this quick jaunt was because the snow melt has made for an incredible amount of water in their waterfalls. We got soak at both Bridalveil and Lower Yosemite. The 'mist' from Bridalveil was at the strength of a tropical downpour and the last part of the trail to the viewing area was under about 5 inches of water. Since shoes will dry out, I tromped on through and reveled in the astounding sight of that massive flow. Exhilarating! Lower Yosemite was even more impressive. It seemed to generate its own downdraft, and even though the base of the waterfall is a hundred yards from the viewpoint, the 'mist' was blowing past us horizontally at a pretty good clip. It roared and thundered and its icy winds prevented anyone from standing on at the viewpoint for more than a view minutes before going numb. The crowd was squealing like kids on a rollercoster.
My new wristwatch that can go off-world was fun on this trip. It can tell the temperature, but while you're wearing it, it tends to pick up your own body heat. Normally, it reads 82 on me. After the hike to Glacier Point, it said my wrist was at 98. After a couple of minutes being buffeted at Lower Yosemite, it was down to 61. I figure one could probably monitor one's self as one went into hypothermia and immediately tried to formulate a plot where that happens and the Suunto Vector has a pivotal role. *g*
Now I need a vacation from my vacations. Unfortunately, work is picking up and they are getting us to work extra shifts. Woe is me. I want to go back on holiday!!!! I have zines to read, for crying out loud!

Eh what and LOL!
Date: 2005-06-11 06:41 am (UTC)Eh, what? It should be *cancelled*?!? I think that's just funny ... because weren't the members of the SDJ Committee (that would be us, among others) frequently accused of *trying to get the show cancelled* waaaay back in Season 6??? ROFLMAO right about now. The funniest part of the whole thing is ... I kept watching, even during Season 6 and I never *once* remember telling anyone that the show should be *cancelled* just because my personal favorite character had chosen to leave the show. I didn't particularly like a lot of the S6 episodes without Daniel in them and with Jonas there, but I still never said it should be *cancelled*, fcol.

Yup, it seemed like the usual packed room and the food and drink actually seemed to be vacuumed up at an even *faster* rate than normal this year! Why, we even went through all *three* Subway sandwiches you generously provided this time. Wow. I'm so glad that Patty and Randy went back to the store Saturday and got more chips and dip and crackers because what I bought Friday evening would NOT have been enough. LOLOLOL. I think we would have had a riot of hungry people on our hand. As it was, the cheese was gone in the first few minutes, I think. But, my, the time flew by, didn't it?
I think everyone seemed to enjoy themselves, though. Let's do it again sometime. ;-)

Date: 2005-06-11 05:47 pm (UTC)I want to do it again next year. Do we like this time slot? Should we make a point of getting this slot, or do you think the one just before it?
As for the SDJ, as you know we were accused of many things both fantastic and outrageous. Apparently requesting changes was a capital offense, but yet if other fans don't like the way the show is going, they'd just rather it be cancelled. Hello? Quit watching if you don't like it that much! I watched S6; there were 5 eps that ranged from wonderful (Abyss) to watchable for me. The rest were dreadful; not even CJ or RDA could make them worth rewatching.

Ah, those negative ions! I'd forgotten that's why waterfalls are such a blast!
Our trip was a spur of the moment thing, a sort of 'let's make this happen.' Sometimes you just gotta do stuff like this.
