First off, I've never liked David Caruso and have avoided his work since early on. I was therefore astounded by his monotone performance, and the melodrama of both him and the show. I hated the show's color palate; all those neon colors, sets that are over lit and the extreme lighting and camara angles were very distracting for me. The show has a definite, extreme style, one that I really don't care for. YMMV, of course.

I also thought the writing was rather poor. Nothing would really have happened and suddenly melodramatic reactions were everywhere. "What did I miss?" I would think, make tivo back up and realise, nothing had happened. The sexy subplots between the regular characters went over my head and didn't interest me anyway. Per usual in medical shows, the procedures were pathetic/hysterical, but that's the baseline for tv shows so I can't rant on that particular point.

Since this show is so completely not my cup of tea, my main question became, would Michael Shanks adjust his acting style to fit in? Luckily, no. He did his usual excellent job. Granted, the opening shot where the investigator ids herself, there's a too long shot on his reaction, but that's editing and direction. The script would have been improved if there had been a scene between Doug and Valerie since they're boyfriend/girlfriend, but they would have had to cut some of the continuing plot between the regulars. Oh well.

Anyway, I thought MS looked great, though a little unsure of himself while walking on the boat. And they did dress him well, I'll give them that. A brilliant blue shirt that really highlighted his eyes on the indoor shots, and white trousers. He did that thing like he did in Absolute Power, where he put his hands in this pockets and the material stretched over his bum, but the camera was too far back to take advantage of the view. A wasted opportunity. What else? Oh, I think he bit his lower lip again. Any drinking game of mine, it's three drinks if Shanks bites his lower lip.

To sum up, he looked great and did well, even though his scenes were rather short. For those that want to ff to his bits, his first scene is at 35 minutes, and the second is at 54 minutes (this is with commercials.)
