Okay, Sunday night whilst I was prepping the broke fridge for replacement and trying to save as much food as possible, I got the notice that it was time to renew my Norton Antivirus software. The program from two years ago wasn't being supported so I bought the new 2006 one. I've never had any trouble with Norton and I've used them for years. It downloaded fine and asked for the computer to be rebooted--and fucked up my computer. Just tonight I got the thing back online after spending most of the week at my computer guru's shop.

He says he has gotten a lot of customers with broken computers from Norton and McAffrey (sp) and they don't support--they just say the customer needs to contact Microsoft or whoever built the computer. He says Microsoft's antivirus software is fine. It's also free and there are no conflicts with Windows. It's called Defender. Whatever you decide to do, I suggust you're prepared when you update Norton.

So, that's why I've been gone since Sunday. I'm off to Comic Con in the morning so I'll not be able to catch up for days. I'm disappointed in many different ways.

I'm still stuck on the first sentence. You get anti-virus notifications working on the fridge? Cool! When my fridge breaks, things just rot...

What OS does the fridge run...? (Sorry, I'm kind of underslept, if it isn't obvious).

LOL! It used to run a real cool program called Freon Begon! Interesting how sleep deprevation can set the creative process spinning on its side. *g*

No, I was multitasking. Bags of ice, coolers and sorting through what could be saved. I was taking a break by playing on the computer.

I've heard of fridges that have a web connection but that seems an odd hybrid to me.

Yeah, I mean it would be really useful to be able to log in from work and find out if the milk has gone sour and your sweetie ate the leftover Mexican so you know whether or not to stop at the store on the way home, but the data aquisition would be problematical!

Until then we have to use workarounds- for example:

Email exchange w/my s.o. last week:
J: "Oh, BTW, you know that ice cream you left in my freezer?"
R: "What, is it gone already?"
J: "Well, in the sense you mean, yes, though technically it's still with me."

Boy, am I glad I read this! I was going to update my computer's antivirus software this weekend! Let me know how it goes with Defender; if it works for you I'll go that route.

I used Norton's forever, too, until I got this computer. I installed it and everything went wonky with the computer. When we called the computer manufacturer (Dell) they said there was a "known issue" between Norton's & this particular model of computer and to switch to McAffee, which came with this computer, so I switched back to McAffee. I didn't really like it because I'd used the whole Norton's thingee with all the utilities, not just anti-virus, but now I use System Mechanic for that.

I've updated McAffee once already with no problems. Bad!Microsoft for making Windows incompatible with everything.

Have a good time at Comic Con. :-)
