I had the best of intentions to do an entry for all the SG eps, but shit happens. Even tonight, I carefully planned my day so I'd be home with dinner done before the show started, but shit happens. My plan is to play catchup, starting now.
So, tonight's episodes? I like. :)
The Pegasus Project:
I really like that Mitchell has left the teenage mentality of the last half of Season 9. I like this Mitchell. And while I'm talking characters, I must admit to cautiously *maybe* liking Sam again. I haven't see the pat acting ticks of the doe eyes, or the gulping, plus she seems more like an officer and scientist again. I expect it's only a phase, but I'll appreciate it for the moment. I liked her interaction with McKay quite a bit. And I think Vala is working in well. She's still fixated on Daniel but very toned down, and quirky instead of crazy. I really enjoy watching her. And Teal'c was awesome at the end there. I'd rather have Teal'c missing from most of the ep if he can do something wonderfully clever, brave and fantastic towards the end. That really works for me.
Who couldn't love the opening scene? "Get up, Sunshine." Heh heh heh! It was SO nice to finally see Daniel get to Atlantis. I loved his expression as he gazed on it. That man has a lot of resolve and it showed on his face, along with the satisfaction of the moment. And anticpation of the upcoming challenge.
I mostly understood the B plot but didn't follow too closely because I thought it'd fail in the end. I was surprised and impressed that it did work and they got three birds with one stone, so to speak. I liked the B plot mostly because of McKay. I had the opportunity to read the script and interestingly enough, there was no lemon in it (just Sheppard mentioning the citrus allergy.) I wonder who thought up carrying a lemon about because it was very funny. As far as continuity on McKay's character, it worked for me. He was first on SG1 and he was an obnoxious SOB. It fits that he revert to his original template because this was a SG1 episode. To me, Mitchell's aggressive manner to Rodney was partly due to how he feels it's best to manage a high maintenance personality (not to mention the guidance he received from Sheppard) and probably because Sam had briefed him on Rodney's habit of sexually harassing her. "We need him for this job, but just ignore anything he says to me. I can handle him." I liked Daniel's bemused expression during the briefing as he watched McKay. I wish they had had some interaction, though!
Daniel was very clever in this. He has a logical methodical mind and I can see that he works very hard to reach most of his conclusions (but he's also capable of those astounding sideways leaps, too. Those together is why he's brilliant, why he's Daniel.) He was prepared to do find hidden clues and to decrypt them at that. Perhaps that is why he figured out so quickly that the hologram was a real Ancient? And oh! That throw away line she had about knowing Daniel during his brief time among the Ancients? Will we ever get to see more of that? We get nearly a full season of the details of Sam's love life, but what do we know about Daniel's ascended time? A few lines in a couple of episodes that serve the plot of the moment. Very frustrating! Anyway, here we got to see Warrior Daniel using his tools of logic and research before waging battle with his duel weapons of persuasion and passion. He is a fighter at heart.
Moments I particularly liked was Weir's doubting of Daniel. Yeah, the hologram wasn't the only one bordering on condescending. Daniel took it all in stride, he doesn't get frustrated but that anymore, he just waits--and watches their faces for the moment when they realize they were wrong. Nice!
I really like Teal'c's scene at the end and man was it perfect for him. That is Apophis' First Prime. He should have many moments like that. Plus I really liked the beauty of it all, the blast coming out of the small Gate to the Ori ship, before the Supergate ignited, and then the kawoosh bisecting the Ori ship just as it fired at Teal'c! What a beautiful effect.
I enjoy watching Vala watch and learn from SG1. She's quite impressed with Daniel and then beams with pride as he outwits his adversaries. I think she still has her hat set for him. Did she call him darling at some point? And one could tell she had a lot of empathy for the fate of Morgan and worried about the possiblity of her being punished. Nice continuity there for her.
I would like to see Daniel go to Atlantis again. It probably won't happen and luckily, he goes to Daniel Disneyland many times in fanfic. Yeah, Daniel Disneyland...for once Mitchell didn't call him Jackson.
Irresistible
Okay, a light, humorous episode. A little of Urgo's speech patterns and a plot point that most SciFi shows have used since I, Mudd and even before probably. The cast got to be goofy and it was enjoyable. The best moment was off screen: Ronan pinned Rodney to the wall?! Me wanna see! When Sheppard and Carson were sitting at the campfire, I did think that Carson sounded normal when he was interrupted by Ronan's arrival. And since there was only five minutes left in the episode, I figured the shot he was giving out would nullify Lucius' charisma. And the best line was Sheppard running off to clean Rodney's quarters!

Date: 2006-07-29 09:43 am (UTC)I loved both episodes. Intense Daniel! We need more intense Daniel, and the storyline was fantastic. This season they aren't winning, and when they win, they didn't mean to. Good stuff.
As for Atlantis, it was about time that a funny episode was actually funny. This was Urgo funny. I can't believe they made a joke about Sheppard's hair. And John cleaning Rodney's quarters? hehe.
I also guessed Carson would be able to help, but it was well written, so I didn't mind.

I didn't mind, and some of that was really funny. It looked to me like the writers went for Rodney as a mix of the arrogant bastard and the comic relief. I can tell you that some Atlantis fans won't be happy. But I liked it and I even have a proper character explanation. *g*
I can totally see having a bit of a regression in front of SG-1. SG-1 are like rock stars in that universe, and as much as the SGA guys have done their stuff, they are a bit of the slackers. And we love them for that! So Sheppard tried to be cool with Mitchell (we just painted) and if he had had a bit more minutes, he'd end up being as ridiculous as Rodney.
As for Rodney, he is not SG-1 favorite people, I can tell. Even if Sam admits he's brilliant and "likes" him a bit, he made a very bad first impression. We haven't seem interact with Teal'c but well, he wanted to leave him stuck in a gate and I'm 90% sure Rodney doesn't get Daniel and Daniel is half amused half "I'm not going into that" with him. Professionally no problems, but Rodney radiates stuff Daniel never cared about. With time, working together, they might be along, but they don't.
Rodney is at his best in Atlantis, where he has made a difference, and with his team, who have learnt that he may be loud and high maintenance but when things get hard, he works and gets them out of trouble. Rodney is a good man, he just doesn't like it to show. Sheppard handles him just fine, and trusts him (that showed in Irresistible, so he just gave Mitchell some advice which he thought it would be useful and at the same time teased Rodney because he just can. And well, Rodney can be a jerk if needed and Sheppard knows how he feels about SG-1, so.
And Mitchell, I bet he was confused between he read, what he saw and what he was told. His geeks are on another league, Sam is military and Daniel has adapted, so he went for the direct approach and it all went downhill from there. Come to think about it, it's a bit like how Lorne was in Runner. We can call it the "first experience with Rodney McKay".
I don't get why they have to be best friends between them. Rodney is a lot of Rodney and his people like him just fine, they're his family. But Rodney can be a handful. And you know? I would like to have a little tension between the SGC and Atlantis. And the Atlantis people standing their ground and closing rounds. That would be interesting to watch.

Date: 2006-07-29 04:11 pm (UTC)LOL! Well, if not in the show, that certainly in the fans!
I love Rodney, but he is a jerk and his behavior towards Sam can be insulting. His people have adapted to him and in return, he tries pretty hard to tone it down. Mitchell probably did hear stories about him but I wonder who from?
I was kinda surprised Sheppard had the lemon. He had to have gotten it to tease Rodney and to seem cool with Mitchell, but really, it was a little disturbing. Poor Rodney when Mitchell actually uses it on him! I felt so sorry for him at that point and that is the beauty of David Hewlett's acting ability, the brilliance of what he can conjour up.
