SG: Company of Thieves & Phantoms
Sep. 16th, 2006 12:09 amI still have the last two SG1 and SGAs on Tivo, but since I was home tonight, I thought I'd watch these two "live" to at least be on the same page with the rest of my fandom. But before I go into that, I just want to do a quick update.
When I hopped in my car to drive to work on Wednesday, the battery proceeded to die. Yes, I'd left the car for 18 days, but I had driven it Sat/Sun/Mon/Tues. Strange timing, that's all I got to say. Like work would believe me if I called up at the last minute on my first night back with an excuse like that! So, after I used Mom's car for the last two days, I went down today and got a new battery. The towtruck guy was impressed with how clean the motor was (the Subaru is 5.5 years old) and asked what sort of trouble I'd had with the car (nothing to speak of, really.)
Also, Cutie Pie came by tonight and asked politely to have some kibble. She looked fine, too. And that little skunk that wants to be our new house cat walked past a pile of peanuts and tried to wiggle through the hole in the screen door to get inside. He's is so cute, but the cats would have kittens so to speak. After I shooed him off, he went up on the berm, laid down on his back and rolled back and forth as he groomed his front paws and tummy. He really is a character, but after we coo delightly at his antics, I catch Big Reg frowning at us. Not going to happened, he says.
Phantoms:
I saw this one first cause I was late getting back to the house. Snarky, pissy Rodney; humming to myself I settle in to enjoy. Ooh! The premise sounds fun as I love that type of plot (all those deadly skills turned back on to their friends. It's a kink, okay?) But I became disappointed because they were all split up and not even aware of each other while they were hallucinating (for the most part.) I was glad to finally learn something about Sheppard's past (and were halfway though season 3? Not in too much of a hurry are they?) but honestly, all the shooting just seemed like a bunch of filler. All the lovely angst about being hunted and betrayed by your buds was never realized, until the end when we get Rodney repeatedly saying "You shot me!" all for comic relief. There was a lot of missed opportunity here. The only other thing worth mentioning was that Carson did CPR correctly, and I had a huh? moment when the guy with the shoulder wound was dead, cold and stiff (did he not ever go out to keep watch or was he dead before that?) and a bigger huh?! that the other guy survived. Yes, I'm too easily distracted by medical stuff that really doesn't matter amongst all the other plotholes.
Anyway, there should be some decent fanfic about Rodney and John's angst.
Company of Thieves:
After the gun and explosion fest that was SGA, I rolled my eyes with all the explosions on SG1. I don't really care for the Lucian Alliance (though I liked the head bad guy) and I'm sick to death of them losing our spaceships (even though they stopped short of losing this one.) If I was in charge, I'd have to ground those ships and totally retrain all the crew. Teal'c being tortured? This is getting as old as Daniel dying. Sam being put on the hotseat and all she can do is look worried and try to delay things. What happened to imaginative, aggressive Sam? Oh, that's right, she's nothing more than an accessory to Jack even though Jack is long gone. She's boring now.
Daniel? Kind of amusing at times. I liked him in the captain's chair though he had no right to be there. I think most of the SGC would follow him anywhere even though he has no authority; he's come back from the dead (multiple times) and saved the world a lot. He's their lucky charm. One thing I noticed tonight in some of the group shots is that frequently he's the biggest guy in the scene. Back when he was following Jack and Teal'c about, he was the smallest guy, now, he has a presence that really draws the eye (especially in leather and wearing a duster.) I don't think he'd really be that flippant in those circumstansces. And, I'm sorry, I thought it totally inappropriate to be making flip jokes when a man is dying in front of their eyes. Yes, he's a bad guy and better him than them, but it is callous and ugly to joke about someone dying. I could see Jack making an up yours gesture as the guy died but that's different. That's communicating with a person, not making a joke of it. The person I perceive as Daniel would not do that. Thankfully, there's not much in this ep that I'd want to rewatch.
Now the worst bit? They killed Emerson. I liked him a lot and he was killed for no reason. I'm so tired of the writers doing this. Pendergast had a noble death, poor Emerson was brutally murdered but it was in a 'action' not 'violence' sort of style and it carried little emotion. Well, I had emotion because I liked him, but it was such a throw away event I was shocked by the writer's choice here. I guess it was done to highlight Carter's reaction but that was weak. Emerson deserved better than this.

Date: 2006-09-16 10:37 pm (UTC)My plan today is to sort through my photos.
That Wheelie is a gorgeous cat. I don't think I'd seen the Thai photos before. And I tried to take jellyfish photos in Seward and that's harder than it looks.

Date: 2006-09-17 05:28 am (UTC)I took the jelly pix with my new Sony, in ambient (i.e. dark) lighting conditions. I love that camera!

Date: 2006-09-16 09:37 pm (UTC)They wrote Sam into a corner where she had little choice but to stall, but after all those other eps where she does nothing to change the out come, I'm just tired of that, too. I think if Jack were in that situation, would the writers have been content to have him do nothing? No.
