Stargate con in Burbank
Nov. 20th, 2006 07:37 amThis is the third SG Creation Con at Burbank I've been to. The attendance is down somewhat; I'd estimate mid-400 when Michael Shanks was on stage, maybe over 300 for the A Dog's Breakfast panel, about the same for David Hewlett on Sunday and mid 200s or less for the rest of the guests. I sat in the back in the cheap seats, paid $25 for each day and got my money's worth. I didn't attend any of the special events but had a good time anyway. :) Because I'm jaded and lazy, I'm not going to write a complete report (in fact, I didn't take any notes.) I will direct you to two other con reports I've read:
Alyburns con report and
Tiia's con report
And I'll post a few measly photos I took (did I mention back row? And don't forget the new camera I'm still finding out how to use.)
Friday: I didn't make the con at all, but I did get to the hotel and joined up with my roommates
deej1957 and
mfluder42. We chatted about fannish things, segueing world politics and even OJ until it was after 3am! You know, that's nothing for me, but for
deej1957 that was unknown territory! I do wish I'd been able to see the programing on Friday as those actors are both delightful on stage and easy on the eyes. At least I'd seen them at cons before.
Saturday: We went for Breakfast at the hotel, then
deej1957 and
mfluder42 went off to the Brunch while I went down to the lobby and finally started on the sequel to Esprit de Corps. The Brunch had been pushed back to accommodate Michael Shanks' schedule. He flew down from Vancouver that morning and flew back up that night (setting a brisk pace in his autograph line.) And then he did the whole Christmas parade in Vancouver on Sunday. I understand he had a bit of a cold, but that wasn't visible when he was on stage. But I digress.
First up was Tony Amendola and Obi Ndefo (who was 5 years old when Star Wars came out so no, he was named after Obi-Wan. I remember getting deeply reflective when TA said people associate truth and intimacy with quiet. Hmmmm.... He and Obi mentioned that being in Science Fiction isn't the detriment it used to be. HBO makes wonderful tv movies - better than many films, and since LOTRs, SF has more respect. Some wonderful soul asked TA what Bra'tac was thinking doing that last scene from Threads. He laughed and said, first off, there was Michael in an united nations flag sarong and they'd worked hard and there was amusement and it was just a funny day. Rick was goofing off, said he wanted one too (the flag.) TA then imitated RDA looking at crotch level and saying "Oh! Hmmm!" (that speculative, interested hmmm that people make.) Very funny.
A Dog's Breakfast panel was next. The trailer was very funny and the crowd reacted quite enthusiastically to it. It was amusing to see David Hewlett seated between his girl friend and his sister, alternately giving them a hard time and then slipping in a compliment. There was a nice happy energy up there on stage, even when Kate smacked David. Man, she was lightning fast with that and apparently has been known to do this when maybe she shouldn't have. She'd smacked David in the forehead in front of Christopher Plummer (not sure I have the right name there) and David mimicked him saying "don't hire her, she's crazy!" I'll leave the rest of this to those with better memories except to say DH is a quick wit, wonderfully funny, can meander quite a way from the original question asked (but it's all interesting) and looks better in person. They had a camera running and they projected the guests up larger than life on a big screen behind them. I'd look at DH, then look at his projected image and wonder why there was a difference. I noticed the same thing about Jason Momoa. I'll just say that their features looked more extreme or pronounced when viewed through a camera lens. Oh, and I should say that I asked Kate in the autograph line if the distribution deal they were negotiating would have the film released fairly soon (rather than held for a later time of year) and she seemed to indicated it would have a sooner release date.
Next was the lovely and talented Michael Shanks. *g* I said earlier that he was happy, and even though he must have been quite tired from all the traveling, it didn't dampen his easy confidence and happiness. I think back to how he was after he left the show in Season 5 and even though he was/is out of a regular job in both cases, there is little similarities between them. This man has a wife and family and will soon have three finished new projects. He has, in a word, confidence.
But what did he say? He said he knew what the question was Daniel kept asking in WOO, but he will never tell. He says it's his one secret. He said he was given three copies of that SG computer game they all did so much work on and his brother-in-law was loading it in; MS said he would soon find out what Chris sounded like when he gets shot. He said he thought the relationship between Daniel and Sam had sibling rivalry, was collaborative, teasing and had respect. A fan asked about his protective response when Sam was threatened by Adria in The Quest (they were a Daniel/Sam shipper I think) but MS thought, knowing how dangerous Adria is, he would have reacted just as same if she had threatened anyone of his friends. And because it bears repeating, he had a big smile when he mentioned the wedding shot from 200, and how the camera panned down to see Jack and Daniel standing together at the altar until you could see they were holding hands. And later when they asked if he could, as a director, change anything in the show, he would change 200 and put back in that hand holding scene. He looked quite fond about the whole thing. He looked a little more resigned/embarrassed when asked how Daniel had changed, he said Daniel had more Jack in him. He just stopped and smiled and said he walked right into that one. *g*
He was asked what hair style he liked best. None of them, especially when the hair was long enough to blow dry. They'd be doing scenes and it would be raining and they'd have to blow dry his hair between takes. Yep, he'd be out in the woods with an electrical appliance inches from his face and the cord would be trailing though the puddles.
He retold the potty-esque practical jokes Chris played on Ben and Michael played on Chris. He got very animated about that scene in The Quest when Sam pulls out a Palm pilot and says it can read a dilation in the temporal field thing so big they'll have to walk through it. Yeah, right! He also launched into a spirited bit about how he'd perused a website and saw Daniel/Thor listed and he wanted to know what 'was wrong with you guys!' He was smiling and playing up the subject for the humor (Thor has no genitalia!) but I did get the impression he wished he wouldn't be asked any more if he reads fanfic. I've seen him get just as definite about other subjects he thinks have gotten too repetitive. He just gets firm with some limits on occasion.
He mentioned a couple of times what fun Claudia was to work with. Said they were working on an idea of a sitcom for the two of them. He also said he had an Irish accent in the next Lifetime movie he was working on and that he was a very bad man in it. He said he wouldn't speculate but he thought we'd see one familiar face over on Atlantis but it wouldn't be him. Of the 2 SG1 movies, he said one would resolve the Ori storyline and the other one Brad was writing and it involved time travel, Ba'al, submarine thing. That made me remember that up at Vancouver earlier this year, N. John Smith had said they were working a deal with the Navy that involved a submarine in the arctic. I wonder... But someone else (Torri?) said that the second film was going to be used to introduce another SG series. But someone (MS?) said that Brad was pushing for another series I think, but if it didn't happen this year, someone else would be doing it because he's tired of asking. (I'm not sure I have all that right though. Please feel free to correct.) Anyway, bugger all just because I'm tired of the PTB using precious SG1 time to launch their other projects. It just makes me pissy to think that one of two last chances at SG1 would be focused on other people. I mean, that's just me speculating, but they've done it before. :::sulks:::
E.T.A: Michael was wearing a band on his wrist that was camo-coloured band, with "Save Our Stargate" written on it. (thanks to
mfluder42 for the clarification!)
E.T.A: He also said that Thor would be back in either the last ep or the penultimate ep (I can't recall which) and it could be described as a "where are they now" sort of show. He said Thor would be sounding even more like Stewie on The Family Guy, and spoke a few words using both the old and the new Thor voices.
E.T.A: He also said he was under orders from home to not take any more jobs til the end of the year. He said Lexa told him if he didn't stay home and help raise his children he'd be waking up to find his nuts in the blender. Then he was quick to explain to the children in the audience he was referring to cashews.
Lastly, I got Michael to autograph that big banner I bought in Vancouver last March. :)
Then we,
astrumporta, TheOneRing and her family, and A and TM drove down to the Galleria for dinner. El Torrito has changed their menu. Hmmmm, good! Strangely enough, we were in bed by midnight this night!
Sunday we slept in a bit, then went down to breakfast at the hotel, meeting most of our same party for the night before.
David and Kate Hewlett were on first on Sunday. David made sure his chair was just beyond sister's reach. Someone asked who could talk faster, McKay or Daniel Jackson. He said there was no doubt who could talk faster and look better doing it--Daniel. Would McKay ever call Sheppard 'John' and would Sheppard be treating McKay any nicer. He said he thought he'd let one 'John' slip this last season, and that he liked their relationship better with the friction between them. Someone asked did he do his own stunts, and he said no, not the hard, dangerous stuff. He did like the running and falling, and the arrows in the ass...he paused there and said, 'great, I can see it now! McKay likes arrows in his ass! I've done their work for them.' He was asked how was Paul as a kisser. He said he thought the best thing was to get right to it and when they did the first run though of the scene, he kissed Paul without warning, and Paul acted like an electrified fish, saying "wha? wha?" "What! Didn't you read the script?"
He mentioned many times about how many lines he had to learn and how he was always talking. He said once he was whining about it and someone asked if he'd seen the SG1 script. He said he looked and it said: Daniel, followed by five pages of dialogue. He said, "oooh, they don't like him, do they."
He said Ben sprung the lemon on him during Pegasus Project. It was at the end of a long day and he was looking forward to getting home and the look on his face was him thinking, 'oh, now we'll never get home! Keep it together!'
Doing the autograph line, the lady after me asked if he did personalizations. His Creation con minder said "no personalization." David dropped his head low and mouthed, "What's your name?" He was agreeable and since they were letting people take the time to chat with him and take non-flash photography, what's the big deal?
Torri was as delightfully whimsical as before, and she'd brought her white dog with her. She was a lot less nervous than last year. The vid before her was a Weir/Daniel vid, which I quite liked. When asked who Weir would be romantic with, she felt probably Daniel. Who would be fun to have come to Atlantis? Daniel fits there. Jack would be fun but it'd probably be the end of Atlantis. She said the two casts have different energy levels with Atlantis being in bed by 9 while SG1 goes out drinking. So "Daniel, Chris and Vala" would be fun to have over there. She likes working with David, particularly when he goes on and one and she gets to reply with one word. She said he gets grumpy when he's hungry but is still funny (or did Jason say that?) She thought Weir liked commanding Atlantis because it was hers, while Torri like being in charge of the SGC, partly because she didn't have to wear a red shirt every day. She said the first time she shot a large weapon she went all girly and cried and said she didn't think she could do it, then two hours later she was "load her up and be sure and give me a full clip!"
We missed the first half of Jason's talk but he impressed me better this time. Before, he only could talk about getting into fights and hanging out with hot women. This time, he mentioned family, some spiritual beliefs, that he would have gone into wildlife biology in college; he seemed more like a person rather than a stereotype. He gave very good answers to the fans.
He also liked working with David, said sometimes he poked him too much then David would get angry with him (but in a funny way.) He made it sound like he was afraid of David.
When asked was there something he wishes they would do with Ronan, he launched into a fairly detailed story outline. He also said he spends a lot of time in Costuming when he was complete control over Ronan's wardrobe. He helped them design the vest jacket thing of his and made sure there was room for lots of knives and weapon. He said he had 37 knives in his hair, one in each dread.
Nothing much new in the merchandise. I bought 3 new comics, a 10th anniversary t-shirt that has all the episode titles on the back, and a few photos. TM gave me a couple of her wondrous photos, and
deej1957 gave me her gold pass gift (a nice black 'totebag' that was the perfect size for photos.) Speaking of which, I'm too tired now to fiddle with the photos. I'll put a couple later on when I've time. I'm sure there will be lots of lovely photos from closer up posted by then. And if I think of more, I'll add it later.

Date: 2006-11-20 03:00 pm (UTC)It's good to read MS is doing so well. The guy has learnt in all these years, hasn't he? I think I'm okay with SG-1 ending. It will be sad and right now it hasn't sunk in, but it makes sense, and reading convention reports like yours really helps. :)
The SGA parts are good too. I hope they let us see the moment when Rodney calls him John because online reactions to that will be interesting to read. ;)
Glad to see you had a good time!

Date: 2006-11-20 07:24 pm (UTC)Glad you had a good time, and I'm glad to read that everyone seemed to be doing well. I just love that MS is already out there, getting new projects and having such a positive outlook on things. But I agree about using SG-1 time to try and make another series. Grrr...
Anyway, thanks for sharing!

Date: 2006-11-24 11:34 am (UTC)As for the dvd movie, I fear it'll be like the first ep of SGA, which *was* a SGA ep, but I'm thinking the SG1 characters might be less of a presence than the new guys. I don't know anything, I'm just being grumpy.
