SG1: The Shroud
May. 6th, 2007 04:42 pmI have to say I enjoyed this one much more on the second viewing, be it from either seeing it on the big screen or whether I just had time to mellow towards it.
First off, I really disliked that mention of the Di Vinci Code. I find I get more and more irritated by the writers wasting time showboating to the audience in this way, showing us how clever they are and how oh my god can't they JUST let us stay in the story? Sorry about that but I dislike the pop culture references when they are talking to aliens, too. It seems provincial, self-centered, childish and rude, all of which is not offset by my "hoped for appreciation" of the joke. I'm not laughing, I'm cringing.
Let's see...the teaser. Merlin takes over Daniel's body. Everybody wants his body, don't they? Merlin, Machello, the Lifeboat guy, whereas the women want his body in a different way. Adria was just the latest in a long line of powerful women who could have anyone, and they all want him. LOL! Some beings broadcast "I'm a victim, kick me;" Daniel must broadcast "For a good time, take me home, I'm yours!" No wonder Jack had grey hair and Teal'c watched his six 24/7. Daniel must be on the galaxy's Top Ten list things to do. Okay, enough with the jokes.
Daniel as a Prior preaching the word of Origin and the people gather eagerly to hear and seem inclined to be converted. He's had ten years experience in convincing all sorts of people to do what he wants. He'd be a good con man if he was less ethical and more self-serving.
In the briefing, I just melted when Teal'c spoke twice about having no choice but to go retrieve Daniel. If he was running the meeting it would have taking two seconds. Vala says Daniel is better than that. I like that she appreciates that quality of his. We know she fancies him and we know she likes pestering him, both of which are good fun. But perhaps it's his goodness that finally got to her and made her want to stay--that and that he believes in her and encouraged her on her road to redemption.
That blue uniform he wore on the Ori ship, that was a seriously good look on him. Great color of his eyes and it gave him a very hot silhouette. He projected eagerness and trust to Adria and she looked at him and saw an all you can eat buffet. *g* She fancied she was seducing him; just before she turned him into a prior, she reached out to hold both his wrists so perhaps she felt he still might resist her.
This was supposed to be, what? six episodes? I wonder if the seduction of Daniel was the B plot to one of the eps; him being turned into a prior would be a good climax for an ep's ending.
Okay, the briefing scene where they repeat everything Daniel just told them. This episode's expositions are a serious hindrance. On first viewing, I felt confused and that pretty much stayed the case for the second viewing. Looks like in editing this story down, instead of leaving in the chases and space battles and cutting the character drama/interaction, they left in the exposition and...actually some of the character drama/interaction. *g* While it was strange that Jack was just in his BDUs, it worked for me that he was just there. In my world, Jack is still at the SGC a lot, he's just out of camera range. *g*
Ahh! A Jack and Daniel scene! I loved that Jack asked the guards/witnesses to leave before he approached Daniel. I do like their banter though I think RDA's delivery is a little off but maybe that is because he thinks he probably addressing Merlin and not Daniel. I find it a little sad that Daniel is back to pleading with Jack to be trusted, for Jack to have some faith in him. It always seems to come back to that. In my mind, Jack and Daniel were an item until the start of Season 9 when Daniel was off to Atlantis. I think they must have had an argument and broke it off because Daniel wanted to go, wanted Jack to trust that he'd return and Jack stood his ground about not letting him go. They broke up and Daniel left. I always thought that the scene where Jack stops by Daniel's lab and Daniel confesses he's feeling afraid had a post relationship vib to it.
And since when does Daniel remember Ba'al torturing Jack? Did he get his memories back in Threads when he descended--again-- or is that from Merlin (but Merlin was in stasis at that time.)
I wish there had been more in that scene between Daniel and Teal'c. They've always had a good heart to heart relationship and all they talked about was plot. I do like that Teal'c believed in him. Teal'c believes, Jack waffles and Carter says it can't be done; no changes there.
I liked Vala's scene with Daniel. CB is a very good actress and their scene together had an intensity to it that was missing from the other scenes.
Woolsey is a little weasel from recommending that Daniel be killed. There's no call for that. There's stasis afterall. He just seems to think Daniel is a threat and puts no faith in that he really could be offering them a victory. The one good thing is that in defending Daniel, it puts Jack more on Daniel's side. I had to laugh when Jack leans down and tells Daniel he's trusting him; it's so like how an adult would cajole a stubborn child -- which is pretty much the way Daniel is acting at that point. He's got a good sulk going on. *g*
I had to laugh again when Daniel has overcome the anti-prior device and has Woolsey up against the wall. The dynamics are such I just wanted to cheer Daniel at that point whether he is good or bad. And what is with those eyelashes? Are Shanks' eyelashes that long anyway and the white powder they have everywhere is giving him that "false-eyelash droop" or have they given him false eyelashes?
In the commercial, there's a plot bunny there. Teal'c commits himself to a Jaffa revenge thing after Daniel Jackson is abducted. I'd like to see him coming to Daniel's rescue with a kick ass attitude! Yeah!
Daniel kidnapping Jack. That's cool. I suppose it's because Jack's always been alpha and Daniel's his beta and could this be a coup? Daniel has rarely been a threat to Jack.
Seems a little unlikely that Mitchell and Carter would be able to use their radios while captured. I did like the Ori flames in Adria's eyes. That's a cool effect.
We haven't heard that tone of pleading desperation in Daniel's voice since he was mortally wounded on the Gou'ald ship telling Jack to go, he'd protect them in the S2 opener.
And the denouement was wonderful. Jack tussling Daniel's hair and calling him sleepyhead, Mitchell calling him Sunshine. I loved that bit where Jack demands proof that Daniel is normal and Daniel does that hand waving thing. Jack looks disconcerted and Teal'c looked alarmed. What do you think he would have done? I'm thinking, Jack would be nekkid. *g* And I like that that is Daniel's answer. Rather then words, Daniel chooses to confound Jack, which is status quo and is fun.
And finally, what's with all the clothing changes for Daniel? I guess I can see them getting him out of the prior robes when they capture him, but why does the team put him into scrubs after he has reverted? And who would do it? Were they checking him out do see if all the prior marks were gone? Maybe they gave him a bed bath or perhaps Scribe needs to write another shower scene? *g*
Could our people have dialed out to prevent the Ori army coming through? Could they have C-4'd the supergate to disable it? Without the Ori to support the Priors, won't they have less power? Maybe??

Date: 2007-05-07 06:29 am (UTC)I've not read many other reviews, but I think it's a hoot so many of us leapt to that conclusion.

Date: 2007-05-07 06:56 am (UTC)Daniel's powers were telekinesis, so he would have moved something on Jack personally. Disrobing him would be one of the less rude things he could have done to Jack. *eg*

Date: 2007-05-07 08:58 am (UTC)Unless you've only written two stories, I'm going to have to find the rest. I've got a 2mg SD card and I've been trying to get all my archives on it for my PDA. Any hints where I should look?
And Murrayofchulak has been busy! How have I missed all this? Huh.

Date: 2007-05-07 09:36 am (UTC)I'm slow, too. I've got three stories I'd like to finish...except on of them I'd actually have to start it first. I've imagined scenes in my mind if that counts. *g* One of the stories is the first SG1 story I've ever started, back when the third season was on. I would like to be doing that right now but I'm tired and fretful. I keep checking on Reg. I hurt him tonight when I gave him his insulin and that was a first. He seems fine but this wearing me out.
