SGA: Reunion and natterings.

Mom comes home tomorrow. Yay! The cats are irritable because they miss her. I've tried to cater to their every whim, but apparently it's Just. Not. Right. Humpf. Mom called today and the laptop has worked very well. I finally went with Nod32 for the anti-virus program, btw. And I bought a Crumpler Luncheon bag from ebay for carrying the laptop around. Like someone else on my flist, I have a problem with acquiring bags and luggage and totes and purses and stuff like that.
There was just a coon argument outside. Momma with three kits was by earlier and they were very playful. This was between momma of one kit and a single coon. It wasn't that growling/snorting like bears but nevertheless when I opened the door, one adult chased the other out of the courtyard and towards the street. The nearly grown kit looked a little lost and slowly walked up towards the hill. I wonder how they find each other again after something like that? Do they meet up at the den? But doesn't that mean the youngster has to walk up by himself? The coyotes have been very active again.
SGA:
I hate to say it, but I don't really like the leather uniforms. It looks bulky and uncomfortable.
I liked seeing Teal'c. I like the moment when he hugged Carter; it was easy to the pain and loss in his face that goes very well with his history that he and Carter were an item for years in Unending.
Okay, I don't really care for the new Carter; I think they've reworked the character. She's as different here as she was in any of the AUs that we say on SG1. Old Carter wore BDUs and had a lanky, tomboyish gait. Her speech was crisp and clear. She had emotions but they were professionally dealt with. Now, we get a lot of skirts, longer hair in a 'soft' style, a different gait. Her speech is slower and breathier with lots of non-verbal sighs, exhalations and things I don't know how to name. The speech is also mushier, the words blending together. She doesn't seem very military at this point. She seems much more like a Dr. Carter than a Col. Carter. I also couldn't help but notice that in her closeups during her scene with Teal'c, she didn't have all the usual heavy makeup to indicate she is a sexy woman, the usual routine they always did every time she had a one on one scene with Jack.
Carter's old manner of speaking did show up when she gave that little speech to the 'welcome to Atlantis' people and again in her scene with Rodney (though why she seemed surprised by the reference to their 'history' that was Rodney's delusions--she's always been spirited in slapping him down. I guess this is just rewriting the characters.) I have to say the lackluster drifting away of the crowd after her speech ended didn't look good. It looked like they had been ordered to stand there. In fact, no one is happy that she's there. Now, I'm not happy that she's there but since I'm vested in the characters and they all look unhappy, there's not much to convince me to change my feelings. Couldn't at least ONE person be pleased? I remember I felt this way about the first episode of Deep Space Nine; no one wanted to be stationed there and I thought why would I want to watch a show about a bunch of people that are grumpy.
Sheppard is different, and not in a good way. The warmth seems to be going away. I've always thought he can be kind of cruel to Rodney but there was an impishness to him that made me cut him some slack, that maybe he thought it was fun. Oh well.
Ronon. I have to say he's grown on me and I liked most of his scenes in this ep. It was nice to see him be more complex and not be just the muscle. I thought the hand to hand combat between him and his ex-friends at the end was stupid. I mean, I liked watching Ronon during the fight, but it was a typical Mallozzi obligatory big action scene at the end. Other annoying Mallozzi notes are lots of corridors and lot of people telling us stuff instead of showing. And, of course, the sense that everyone is acting slightly out of character. He always shoehorns the characters to make his plot work. And, lastly, he just had to have Carter bring a photo of Jack with her. At least he was in BDUs and it was outside.
And I can't help but giggle that she gets to mournfully take her promotion to another galaxy while we saw multiple times Jack wanted Daniel to stay home. It's a funny old world, isn't it?
But I do like that new Atlantis sets; the waterfall at the dining room (has that always been there?) the nice shot looking out at the ocean from the balcony. Atlantis looks very pleasant, and very Vancouverish. *g* I think I would have liked a few words about the new planet they are on. I think that's just my kink for wanting to be orientated.
And I did like the Zelenka scenes and all the stuff with Rodney on the Wraith lab. Interesting that at least one of the Wraith found a comb and some elastic bands to keep their hair tidy.
ETA: Tivo quit recording on the hour and this apparently went on for another 2 or 3 minutes. My recording ended right after Ronon killed the big guy that slashed the woman's throat. "Hasn't there been enough killing?" Ronon asks in all his bloody glory and the picture freezes on his face. What did I miss?

Date: 2007-10-15 03:12 pm (UTC)In my brain, Carter's nekkid Cam pictures were hidden in her underwear stash. ;-)
all the stuff with Rodney on the Wraith lab
Except I'm furious that Rodney wouldn't realize right away he had an anti-Wraith weapon right there in front of him in stasis. He just programmed them! But no, TPTB had to do yet another OOC moment just to set up the dramatic surprise of the Replicator ignoring them. Gah.

Date: 2007-10-15 04:07 pm (UTC)And you're right. I've been trying to pinpoint exactly what was bothering me about the few scenes Tapping was in, and she's NOT playing the woman who is a military officer. She has long hair, she still has a superiority complex though, she's not dressed in uniform - in fact, I think she looks too similiar to Weir in that uniform, she needs a totally different look even if it IS the base uniform, and Tapping needs to completely drop the Canadian accent. It pops up constantly. In the earlier SG-1 shows I could tolerate it, because, well, Carter wasn't so MUSHY and she was more fun in general to watch. But now - no, Tapping wants a new, softer Carter, the Woman Officer, and that's too bad. What's wrong with Carter being a hard-ass, experienced off-world Colonel?
No, I don't like Carter now as an inoffensive mensch.

Date: 2007-10-15 11:37 pm (UTC)I went back to watch her on some of the SG1 eps I still have on tivo and she is plainly a different person.

Date: 2007-10-15 11:16 pm (UTC)I was reading Mallozzi's blog and he had it that she said General O'Neill pushed to get her this post. He, and later, apparently AT had reservations about possible percieved impropriety but the other writers thought it was fine. Later, they had her say it was O'Neill and Woolsey, but the scene was dropped to bring the ep to the right length.
Between that and apparently on a SGA commentary where they wrist slap fans for thinking that it's rape if a character uses alien technology to make women sleep with him. Those writers need to have the Mountie give them a lecture about what's criminal behavior. What pigs.

Date: 2007-10-15 04:32 pm (UTC)So Carter brought her picture of Jack with her, huh? I guess that's because she couldn't have the real thing along? She really is pathetic, isn't she?

Date: 2007-10-15 11:21 pm (UTC)I kept expecting momma to scoot back to her young one but either she chased the other one pretty far she she took another route back to the hill. I'll have to do a nose count tonight. One night last week two of the littlest coons were munching away and I was thinking horrible thoughts and finally, momma and her third baby showed up. I thought I was gonna have to be a foster mom!

Date: 2007-10-15 08:13 pm (UTC)I never thought of that.
As for the end...at the time I started writing this, nobody had answered that question yet. I remember the ending of Ronon alone in his room on Atlantis. Teyla came in and gave him back his painting. She said that Rodney wanted him to have it back, and Ronon said, "I didn't give it to him." That was kind of cute.
Then Teyla left and Ronon was left sitting alone on the bed. My Tivo shut off at that point, too, so I don't know what else happened, and I can't remember if there's anything else that I'm missing. I do remember Ronon meeting up with the Atlantis gang and saying, "Let's go home," too, so that must also have been after the fight scene that you saw.
Hopefully someone else will come along who has better details, but that's what I remember.
As for Sam... I loved Sam in the early seasons of SG-1, but later on, though I still loved her, I also found her irritating. Then by season 8 (the Pete breakup!) I absolutely hated her with a passion. I got over that and liked her again after that, but...I'm not really a big fan of having her character on Atlantis. I have liked her interaction with Rodney when he's been on SG-1, but I wonder how it will change things on SGA which is Rodney's place.
I haven't followed spoilers for this show, so I don't really know if my fears will come true or not, though I don't mind being spoiled.

Date: 2007-10-15 11:30 pm (UTC)I liked Sam until she started mooning after Jack. When it became apparent he was never gonna give her any encouragement, and the terrible thing she did to Pete, she became pathetic.
Thanks for telling me about that scene with the painting. That actually made me LOL. Very funny. I read Mallozzi's blog and apparently one of his old friends got away.
