We're here, we're having fun. It's so great having all my cross country friends all in the same place for a few days. Very cool.

The con attendance seems way down. And while there is tons of SPN stuff around, the SG1 stuff is pretty thin. My bank account approves and I live vicariously through the joy of my multitude of SPN fan friends.

The SG party was well attended. The room was full without being stuffed to the seams as it was a few years ago.

Our door decoration is supplying us with giggles and flash photography outside the door. It's our fav characters having a party since they got bored with doing nothing because of the writer's strike. We have a burning Mary suspended from the ceiling so it's heavy on the SPN aspect.

My roomies are about ready. Catch you later.

New Blood - a good thing?

I still hope to make it one day to mediaWest.

BTW, I saw an explanation for why the vid show was even smaller this year (this sort of lightly touches on your comment about con attendance being down): they do no outreach to vidders.

I know other conventions with vid shows have had to open up their vid shows to a wider circle of vidders. I wonder if Mediawest as a whole might benefit from a greater 'push" into fannish online arenas to attract more attendees or newer attendees. I loved what Escapade did this year - they offered a small discount to first time attendees that were referred by an attending member.

ps. post photos of your door?

To tell the truth, I didn't get to the vid show this year. And then the people I ran into expressed dismay at it, which made me want to go even less. Thanks for the link...and after seeing how many small fandoms were represented I now regret not going.

I think the economy is hitting fandom hard. There's not as much spare money to be found; I know there are fans who make good money but most of my friends are stressed. The people I know who drove in made fantastic time because the traffic was extremely light.

Then there is the aging of fandom. So many grey heads! Of course, everything you go to a con for can be got online so how to get the new younger fans to come, to see the worth of physically being together with a bunch of fans?

And thirdly, I wonder about the people that have put on these cons for decades. How do they see their endpoint? When they retire from fandom, will the con go with them? Do they want to hand it over? Maybe they like that it isn't as big as it once was?

I get the vib that the vid part of MWC isn't ran too well. My vidder friends did their stint running the vid show and weren't relieved for at least an hour past their time. Could have been longer as I passed the friend in the hallway running around trying to find the person running the show to find out what was going on. Frustrating, you know?

nods. many of the issues you raise have been/were plaguing Zebracon and Escapade. I did like what Escapade tried this year - offer a small discount to first time fans - they just needed to do it earlier and advertise more widely.

But given that there are a few smaller conventions popping up - some fandom specific, some not, there still is interest in conventions even among younger/newer fans. Just not enough outreach and connection or interest in outreach and connecting between the established conventions and the newer fan base.

Hey, was that YOUR door? It was a good one!

I'm always amazed at how I can be there for an entire weekend, almost never be in my room, and I still only see some people once or twice. At the very last panel of the con, I ran into an old friend who I'd completely forgotten he's always there! LOL

I'm sorry we didn't get to chat more during the weekend, but then again, that's what's great about lj--we can still keep up. And I'm all signed up for next year, as always.

I'm signed up, too.

Yeah, a few days later after I ran from the panel to answer the cellphone (it was Deej announcing she was outside the door *g*) I realized I never got back to you so we could chat! Darn.

As for the door decoration, are you sure you just didn't like it because of that photo of Carson rubbing McKay's tummy? *g*

I DO love that picture, it's such fun!

I saw the comments above about no young fans coming to cons. We talked about that this year as well. It's a shame, but they don't have the fanzines to draw them in like we did. I bought so little this year, I doubt I would come again--EXCEPT for seeing so many people I know.

I also enjoy the panels. Discussing the show on lj is great, but I get tired of typing all the time. It's nice to have the give and take of actual conversations. As long as the moderators are good. Perhaps I should actually moderate a panel or two sometime; they seemed a bit short-handed there this year, too.
