Yet another raging fire. The mayor of Los Angeles is on the tv right now saying the fire is threatening the power lines that serve LA. If they go, so goes the power. He wants us not to use electricity today even though it's going to be near 100 degrees.

I just got home after running my ass off all night saving babies and I have to work tonight. If he thinks I'm going to stew in my own juices for 8 hours before I bounce up to report to work all fresh and ready to go, he's frelling crazy. I'll turn off a lot but I am not turning off the A/C.

Is it me or does it feel like the world is slowly unraveling on oh so many levels?

And needless to say, we'd be lost without all those brave firefighters. I can't watch the news anymore as it's rows of houses in flames. I just can't take it anymore.

I drove through Montecito literally only hours before the fire began - and then to see it blazing only a few hours later - creepy! And then last night another fire in Saugus, with precious little time for the residents to get out.

It's too scary how fast those things move. Terrible.

We have ash from the surrounding fires in Sylmar all over us, with our windows closed. We're running the A/C off and on because dammit, we're not going to open the windows! And I sheepishly admit I am running the dishwasher and washing machine.

In the meantime, hubby and I got our important papers together (or I did) while he prepared the minivan just in case the fire started running in our direction. We're only a few blocks from one of the evac areas. Fun.

I hope conditions today are better?

It's probably a very good thing to be organized *just in case.*

You ran the dishwasher?! Mayor Villaregoso will be devastated. *g*

Oh yeah. You can still smell the smoke from the fire, and there are still ashes flying around, but it's okay. We were a bit panicked all day (I was, low-level) wondering where exactly the fire was and if it was going to jump the freeways again.

And yup, I even did the laundry! Now, I think I have to go through the pile of Very Important Papers I stuck into a tote bag and figure out what to do with them. Things like birth papers, SS cards, mortgage papers (lots of those, ugh) and car titles. I'll have to rent a box at a bank, I think for some of this stuff.

It's all the negatives from when I used to take pictures with film that stump me. Those are all over the house and either with their photos or in three ring binders. I have to think of a different system that doesn't take up as much space.

The Complex fire was close to us and if the winds had reversed it would have been scary. We were making a list of what to grab. I'd kind of like to have all the valuables in one place but if the place was every burgerized, that would make it so easy for the robbers. What to do....

It is such a relief the weather has changed.

My digital photos are on the computer and backed up on an external hard drive which is one of the items to grab in a disaster. The film based photos, like yours, are everywhere. My plan was to gather them in a big box...and then decide where to go from there. *g*

It's awful here too, as now there are fires in Orange county. I went out briefly today to do a couple of errands, and was sniffing and clearing my throat after only a short time. Very scarey! The sky is orange, and there's ash blowing all over the place. Days like this make me wish I was far, far away where it's raining!
I should have been test driving a car, but it was too creepy outside, so I'm going to stay in and have left overs from Lucille's for dinner!
Advice for when you have to go out there. Have you car A/C on recycle mode, so that you aren't sucking in air from outside the car.

It's only been since last night that we've gotten smoke smell. No ash as yet as--unless the wind changed--we are upwind from the fire. You must be miserable though. Ash in the apt by now I bet.

Did you talk to Bunny yet?

Hugs, hun! Our neighbours, Australia, often have devastating bushfires around Christmas and New Year, and on through the summer. They're having awful droughts, and many houses burn. A lot are built in the bush around Sydney. Australian bush is naturally designed to regenerate in fire, so often it will burn as mother nature intended, but also it's often deliberately lit. It's heartbreaking to see, and often the ash will cloud the sky over in New Zealand, on the prevailing westerly winds. So I can very much empathise with what is going on in CA.

It strikes me that I don't know what you do. Obviously a medical professional. Do you work in a NICU? I have so much admiration for NICU nurses after Griffin spent 2 weeks in ours.

Southern California and Australia have a lot in common, unfortunately. But that's amazing you get the smoke sometimes. How far is that?

I work as a Respiratory Therapist. My favorite place to work is the NICU. We deal with the breathing end of things and run the ventilators, attend high risk deliveries...stuff like that.

Do I remember that Griffin was teething recently? He wouldn't stop crying for some reason. How is he now?

I'm not sure how far we are from Australia, but it's 3 hours flying time Auckland to Sydney, and less coming back due to the prevailing winds. When they have very bad fires, we get quite hazy and very red sunsets.

Ah, I do remember you mentioning the respiratory specialty, now my memory is jogged. Griffin had CPAP when he was born, but only for about 12 hours. After that he was in for jaundice and feeding issues.

We worked out Griffin's crying issue - he came out in a horrid snotty cold about 36 hours later, so I guess he had a nasty sore throat. Thank goodness it was something temporary!

Sore throat! No wonder baby wasn't happy!

At least he's back to normal now.

I don't think I've ever known where you are, exactly, hon. Are you out of harm's/the fire's way? Hope so!

And hears hoping there's a break in the weather to help the fire fighters!

*hugs*

San Dimas, about 30 miles east of Los Angeles. The Complex fire was heading our way, about 8 miles to the south.

The weather has changed so things are a lot better now. Thanks for asking. :)
