Varmit update
Jan. 10th, 2005 11:42 pmIt has been raining a lot lately. A lot. I'm enjoying it, but things are tough for so many others, which tends to put a damper on things.
Another raccoon came by tonight and it might have been Cutiepie. Unfortunately, the kibble turns to mash in the rain; this raccoon was running her hand through the paste and staring at the garage door. I kept tapping on the glass door to get her attention before I opened the door, but she wouldn't look back at me for the longest time. Finally she did and only took one step backwards as I tossed out some new stuff and peanuts, and then walked up to the door while it was still open. Her calm demeanor makes me think it was Cutiepie. So, if it was, maybe she'll come back and realize the dog is gone for good.
Being a good Varmit Mom, I also put some bird seed out the little birds. It must be hard for them when it's cold and raining for days. How do they eat?
Even though we live on a hillside, we have good drainage and the incline is rather shallow behind the house so I sincerely doubt there'll be any trouble there, so don't worry about us.
Garage Guy called the house on Friday night while I was at work. It was 10pm and raining heavily. Mom said there where 4 collect calls in quick succession, and finally she heard the operator tell GG that 'it seems they're not home.' GG had supposedly gotten a full paycheck just two days before. He should have been just ending his shift at a place that is a less than 2 miles down the road and certainly not worthy of a collect call. I had told him *less than 2 weeks ago* I did not want him calling up Mom asking for rides when it was dark and raining, that he should put some cash aside for taxi rides. Ordinarily, a collect call is a red flag for some serious distress but in this case, with GG's history of drama and manipulation, I think it was just more of the same. If ever there was a Tar Baby, this guy is it.
Oh, and I spent way too money on a tv, but am loving it. *g*

Date: 2005-01-12 05:27 pm (UTC)I found myself thinking, during the worst of the rain, about poor homeless kitties and etc. who had no place to go. And I cuddled my two a bit extra. My supervisor just had to have her kitty Forrest (Gump) put to sleep yesterday, and I feel so bad for her.
Glad that you don't have to worry overmuch about sliding hillsides.
What kind of TV?

Date: 2005-01-16 02:45 am (UTC)As for the rain, I could the little birds clinging to the stucco under the eaves and not being able to search for food for days--how can something that small survive the cold and wet for days without eating? Wild animals have it so hard. I think I'd like to hang some bird houses under the eaves on the lee side of the house. I was also giving my boys an extra squeeze in thankfulness that they were safe and warm.
As for the tv, there are just too many choices out there. I went to Paul's TV in La Habra and bought a plasma tv for about half price--and even at that I'm glad to have 2 years to pay it off! It's wide screen and 42 inches, which is appropriate for the room it's in. Any pro DVD looks absolutely awesome! Regular tv has a stretched image (I could switch it but there'd be bands on the side and may cause burn in which isn't covered in the warrenty.) Regular tv shows can look quite good or not so good--I'm not sure what is the deciding factor is. Commercials almost always look great. *g*
I think it's a matter of getting used to 'different' and I'm content that the 'disposable tv' is not sharp if it means that the dvd stuff is knock-you-on-your-ass awesome. *g* And I imagine that there was probably a better choice out there, but space, weight and installation were factors also. Anyway, tv broke, we went out the next day and bought a tv and they delivered it the day after--a day before the rains came. Sometimes it's good to make a decision even if it's not 100% right. The bottom line is that we're both happy and were able to take advantage of the Superbowl sales.

Date: 2005-01-17 08:51 am (UTC)Wow, you were ambitious as far as your TV! Sounds like you got a gorgeous one. About the most I've been able to drool over for myself, realistically, is maybe a 24-27 inch LCD, at some point. The prices are just so outrageous. But it's fun to dream! I had great fun fantasizing before somebody won the latest lotto jackpot. Mostly evil fantasies involving my job and my co-workers, lol.
Happy TV viewing! :-)

Date: 2005-01-18 04:43 pm (UTC)I'm going to be getting a new 'puter within the next six weeks or so, and hopefully a new 17" LCD monitor. And, eventually climb into the 21st Century and get DSL after that. It's weird how they always say that you can just upgrade your computer, but I've found that every 3-4 years or so, the changes are so great that it's sort of pointless to do that, and you really might as well just buy a new one, esp. as the prices keep coming down.

Date: 2005-01-19 07:41 am (UTC)And congrats on your new computer and DSL when you get them. I think it's money well spent, really. I'd rather cut back in other areas.

Date: 2005-01-18 07:58 am (UTC)Unfortunately, I won't be at Snow's. I'm going to go visit Germaine this weekend! Last time I was there it was 106 at 8pm. This time it will be different and in a good way.
If you give them to Chris, I'll be seeing her next week. Just let her know she can't pass 'em off as my Christmas presents, though! *g* Thank you for thinking of Momma Coon.

Date: 2005-01-18 04:39 pm (UTC)Okay, I'll give the goobers to Chris. Hope I remember them in my trunk!
I think it's pushing 85 in my neck of the woods today. One week drowning, next week frying...gotta love it.
