Spoilers for 4th Horseman part 2 :

I did enjoy the Jaffa storyline in this episode. Things had come to a head and people were actually taking a stand and doing something for a change. Bra’tac and Teal’c have such good chemistry and a lovely relationship. It’s always good when Bra’tac shows up.
I would love it if he would lead the Free Jaffa.

I love the new credits and that they’ve chosen good images of the characters.

The Sodan Warriors are a good addition to the SG universe. Dare we hope that they won’t be destroyed by the end of the season? I like that they have their own values and had already decided to resist the Ori.

I can’t say I enjoyed the Carter/Orlin storyline. In all their repeated scenes, they don’t actually do anything different from what was established in their initial scene. I was impressed that Carter had tears at one point, but unfortunately, the dramatic oomph of that scene didn’t make a case for her being that emotional (I feel this because of what it’s taken to make Carter tear up in the past.) Plus, I hate that “touching” music in those scenes; it’s like having a little sugar sprinkled on my hot fudge sundae. And when Orlin spilt the blood, Carter was only concerned with Orlin’s safety, and shut down another colonel’s assessment that Orlin was a danger to other people. Orlin agreed and left, and Carter is left with her bad judgment plain for all to see. It’s disturbing that this is what these writers do to a character when they REALLY like her.

I enjoyed Mitchell’s briefing of the Sodan. Daniel and Mitchell are achieving a good patter; they’re making a good, functional team. And I like their black BDUs. :)

Two sure signs you’re watching a Mallozzi script are a countdown clock (to provide tension) and lots of walking around corridors (to eat up time.) Walter is the ticking clock in this ep. He is constantly “telling” us how the virus is spreading and how many countries it is in. Of course, telling not showing makes the Earth bound segments of this episode drag quite a bit. I think the Orlin and Carter scenes have taken the place of the corridor walking.

Another sure sign of a Mallozzi script is the lifeless dialogue. Actually, all Orlin’s dialogue was painfully rout and clichéd. I heard someone mention that TPTB wanted a flat affect from Orlin but I don’t think it worked at all.

I liked the laying-the-blame briefing. For the first time, I really felt that Landry is the head of the SGC, that he belongs and is vested in the place. Before, it seemed like it was just another assignment for him. The international bickering was actually kind of interesting, and I did enjoy Landry and the Russian fussing at each other. I was never comfortable with Jack’s intense dislike of the Russians (but that was part of Jack’s character) but Colonel Chekov is best when he’s in conflict with someone.

I’m glad they got William B. Davis as the Prior. So many times, I tune out the Priors as they have no personalities, but he can pull it off and be interesting--he can say all that dogma and not have it sound like “blah blah blah” because he puts in an interesting inflection or a tilt of the head. It makes this Prior a former human rather than a mindless mouthpiece.

Hot dog fingers. I laugh everytime I see that bit.

Oh, does Teal’c ever look mighty fine in this episode, especially with all that metal of the Jaffa armour and gold paneling; not too many people can manage that. There was an excellent scene on Chulak between Teal’c and Gerak. It was very powerful and CJ did a great job of giving Gerak an impassioned argument. Those two really sold that moment.

Hammond is wonderful; I so miss him. He’s looking fine. I adored his crinklely smile as he beamed at Daniel.

The scene between Lam and Landry was good. Initially, I thought Lam came off too accusatory in her verbal attack, but once she had established that emotional level, it made it appropriate for Landy to be in tears by her admission and made the scene work in the end. I think her whole speech is rushed; her dad is dying and she’s had this epiphany that she needs to share with him because it will be healing for them both. If she had had more time to let her emotions well up naturally, it would have been better. Since this schism has been lurking in the background since the beginning of the season, they should have giving this scene more time. And, is Lam’s stethescope akin to Janet’s white penlight?

Poor Gerak. I was saddened to see him die, but at least he did realize the truth and escaped his enslavement to the Ori.

Orlin ends up in a geriatric facility? How heavy handed. Wouldn’t it be better to have him in a day care sort of thing? There would still be people to watch over him, but he’d be in a much more stimulation environment. He could find younger children to interact with, kids who were more on his level. This ending just made me groan, but that’s just me.

As for Atlantis, it had a couple of good bits. Clowns, Sheppard getting the Wraith ships to destroy each other, and all the McKay bits (especially his fight with the guards.) Really, all the McKay bits were wonderful; too bad it was all for naught. What's all that about?! He risks his life to be brave and nothing comes of it. How wasteful. And as others have said, seeing Sheppard alone save the day was kind of boring.

BG was awesome. I admit I found watching this show took effort becuase they kept losing and getting mired down in depressing stuff, but lately, wow! Very compelling! I was talking to a friend who has been listening to the commentaries on the Atlantis dvds. She said there was one part where they were repeatedly said how edgy and dark Atlantis was. We shared a good laugh over that because, one, it so obviously isn't, and two, they were tring to co-op BG's attitude and that's just ridiculous. It's well known that people that work in television don't have the time/won't lower themselves to watch tv recreationally, and I have to wonder if this is the case here. Hello?! Have you ever watched BG? How could they and then make a statement like that.

Anyway, all the shows had good bits. The flaws with SG-1 are typical weaknessess of a Mallozzi script. Atlantis, I don't know why the non-Rodney bits were dull. BG was all good. Friday night is interesting again.

Malozzi wrote part 2 of 4th H? That explains why it was a mediocre and bland.

But at least it wasn't outright insulting.

I guess that's a step in the right direction. Right?

(too bad there's no rolling eyes emoticon)

Insulting? Not really. Trite and cliched--oh yeah.

I liked the Gerak and Teal'c scene at the end, but I'm thinking it was more to skill of the actors. The banter between Daniel and Mitchell was really more of the not-character specific dialogue Mallozzi writes, but I just liked how they said the lines. Again, it's the actors adding more. The Orlin and Carter stuff did not rise above the tired dialogue though.

Any sign of the balloon??

I think that the good stuff was mostly the actors rising above the drivel they were given. I'd love to see someone who could really write get their hands on Daniel, Teal'c and Mitchell. Can you even imagine!?

No sign of the balloon...and it's bright pink too. But small. And I haven't been able to catch sight of everything, since Maggie is fond of going out of sight for her personal business. :)

That is what I wonder about: where would this series be now if they had gifted storytellers who were passionate about the show (instead of golf) and hadn't been trying to kill the show off since S5. It would have been awesome.

It says M&M. And for that reason, I'm not really counting this as "Oh, S9 sucks" because in this particular case, it's just Mallozzi who's sucking. :)
