We're back from our little desert trip. We left quite late on Friday, but honestly, I was still exhausted from work and it was either leave when we could manage it or not go at all. But we got there and that was a victory. We stopped for dinner at Buffalo Bill's for dinner, where it was cold and windy. We usually stopped at a Del Taco in Baker but we thought we'd be different this time. In future, we'll go back to the Del Taco as I don't think the food at the casino was worth the extra time and $$$. B waited up for us even though she was quite tired, bless her heart.
We spent the next two days in Laughlin shopping at the Rock and Gem show. I bought a couple of cool rocks that have lights inside of them, you know the kind that make the rock just glow with a mood lighting type of thing? And I bought some other stuff that was pretty and shiny. *g* All of our party came back with goodies so it was a fun trip.
The next day, now bereft of funds, we drove to the ski resort up Mt. Charleston, you know the one with the ski lodge? Ha ha ha!!! The lodge is basically a plywood shack, with a locker room on the ground floor and a little cafeteria and bar on the second. We got our hot chocolate and watched the native fauna, which was mostly snowboarders. I think there was good reason that there was mostly snowboarders there as other folks wouldn't want to share the slopes with such a rude group. But the drive there was very scenic, the weather wonderful and it was good to just hang with B and talk.
Tuesday, still missing anything folded and green in our purses, we decided to drive to Hoover Dam. Once we got to Lake Meade, we opted to go left and drive up to the Valley of Fire instead of going to the dam.
The Valley of Fire was very impressive, all red sandstone and eerie shapes. At one point there was a metal staircase going up the side of a monolith, which seemed odd, but out of curiousity, we braved the heights to find out...there were petroglyphs up there! How cool! Of course, as I inched further out on the platform, my mantra was "don't look down, don't look down!"
After yet another buffet dinner, we gathered our belongings, hugged our hosts and left about 8:30pm, and made it home in less than 4 hours (you hear that, sheepsclothing?) And then we spent hours petting the cats as their lovesponges were completely dried out. And Big Reg slept cuddled up to me all night long. That's happiness: a successful roadtrip to visit a good friend and a welcoming flood of love when one returns.
Anyway, I'll try to posts some photos tomorrow. I got to go to bed as I need to take the car in for it's 45,000 mile check up. I think I need new tires, too. Good thing there's another paycheck coming tomorrow. :::sigh:::

Date: 2006-01-22 06:49 am (UTC)Glad you had a great time, and had a nice time with the snowboarders. I don't think it's the sport so much as the generation gap folks that are using the snowboards. I've skied among them so i know. They're usually aggressive, demanding and don't give a shit if they go right across the back of your skis. The ski resorts try to control them, by building them separate obstacle courses etc as they do bring in money, but local skiing has mostly been taken over by them now, and you have to have eyes in the back of your head to watch for them all.
Hope you've been looking at the escapade panel ballot. I don't understand half of them. WTF is LGBT lit? Of course i was too late to enter one. Where does the time go?

Date: 2006-01-23 04:55 am (UTC)Snowboarders are feral and tribal. Certainly not civilised. I can see where ski resorts would like to keep them separate.
I need to do the Escapade thing tonight. Where does the time go!?
