Maybe it's not as bad as I feared. While I usually only see one raccoon at a time (sometimes with another one passing through while the first one eats and drinks) I think I'm seeing different ones, so maybe the mob hasn't been decimated by illness or misfortune. The thin one is still wobbly and weak but is getting stronger. She now can grip kibble in her tiny little fingers and bring it to her mouth to eat. Then there was this other one who was still a bit distracted and weaker than he should be; he put an egg into the water bowl to crack it open. There was only one raccoon to do that (because, let's face it...what happens when you put an egg in water and swish it around?? It disappears! Only Mr. GreedyBoy was that, eh, dense to keep repeating that behavior.) And I think there was a third raccoon last night, Mr. Shyboy. He was one of the mob, but everytime we'd throw food out to the group, he would always dart under a table and stare at us until we stepped away from the door. This raccoon did this. So, maybe three of this summer's babies are still around, trying to cope on their own. I always kind of thought of this group as a tour group. They were way more interested in interacting with each other and they were always together. My current theory is perhaps the group fragmented due to the mating season, and now all these guys are trying to get by on their own. Maybe they aren't as successful by themselves, and are a bit lonely and scared to boot. They are very smart and obviously very social, and were a part of a tight-knit family. This has got to be rough for them.
