We're back from the con. It was fun in a low key sort of way. I'm not quite sure where the different energy level came from, but I did re-up for next year.

Bunny was sick during the con then suffered the shock of discovering she'd left a number of her coordinating bits and pieces at the hotel. We called and they said they'd mail them back if they found them. Those bits and pieces were favorite bits and pieces and not replaceable. She is not happy. At all....

The main bit of illumination I got from the con was concerning SGA fandom and why it's so popular. The panelists we up front that the show isn't that well written, but in this case, it works in our fannish favor. It becomes a scaffolding that fans can decorate as they choose, with TPTB giving the fans some stuff, but it's exactly the type of stuff fans crave.

Speaking of craving, there are three definitions of crackfic. 1) the writer must have been on crack to write that. 2) I must be on crack to like this. 3)I'm craving more of this fic like an addict craves crack. Rodney as a worried turtle was mentioned a few times...I am going to have to find that story.

Apparently, fans have been leaving other fandoms en masse. The Enterprise fans weren't happy with the last season and came as a group. The Pop Slash fans tumbled into the SGA pool together. The Smallville fans arrive and were amazed at the continuity (I watch Smallville and can see why they'd think that.) Angel and Buffy fans came with their posses, too. Potter fans who had been looking for a way to leave the fandom for the last 2 years suddenly found the doornob. People who haven't shared a fandom in years are back together again. One person described it as a perfect fandom for fans who need a break from fandom.

So, everyone is enjoying the high, the freedom and the craziness and doing their own thing. For now....

Now it all makes sense. It also makes sense that just a portion of SG1 fans made the jump as SG1 fandom is not that free form.

Speaking of SG1, I finally saw Arthur's Mantle and enjoyed it. Daniel got to solve the puzzle. I quite liked the Daniel and Landry scenes, much more natural now. And Landry said at one point, "Mitchell, Carter and Daniel." The general called him Daniel. :::smiles::: Anyway, the story was fun and moved right along.

BG was pretty amazing. This is why it's a good thing to stick with a show through their awkward teenage years.

SGA was interesting, and that's a compliment. Ethical questions! Who'd have thunk? And was that the groundwork of a season ending cliffhanger there?

House! My, my! Did that patient hold up a mirror to Cameron on that little matter of wanting to sleep with the boss? THANK YOU!!!!

And Boston Legal. :::love, love, love::: Denny gets his house guest back. I wonder if Alan has a hidden agenda. *g*

As far as I know, you have turtles, penguins (lots of them), centaurs, regency settings, fantasy settings, crazy settings.

It's insane. And quite fun. Because there's crack fic, but there is really really good stuff.

As you say, there are many people who don't even watch sg-1. Some are casual viewers, but it was not "sg-1 fans do both" (though some of us do). There are many people who don't care about sg-1 or its fandom.

Now the thing is, how long is going to last. Call me cynical, but we're entering season 3, and we know well what kind of PTB we're dealing with. On the bright side, we don't have a "Daniel situation", because the dynamics are different, and Martin Gero is the main Atlantis writer so M&M don't do much (yet), but there's part in me that says "enjoy it while it lasts" because we know fandoms tend to blow up. And with so many people in this one, it's gonna be spectacular.

Am glad you had fun!

I've read one penguin story and enjoyed it (Animalia Sequence.) I've heard that there were two that appeared together and started all this. Can you direct me to where the other one is, please? And there are lots of turtle stories? Huh.

I do read a bit in SGA but it's not a good match for me. Some stuff is good, but other stuff...it's like walking into a room where everyone is laughing hysterically at a paper cup on the floor; maybe you had to be there when it happened and travel together with the others to be in synch with the merriment. I did dl Shalott's stuff because someone rec'ed it and I enjoy her stories in other fandoms.

As for overlaping fandoms of SGA and SG1, there's some, but SG1 fandom did not leave en masse like these other groups did. And while there are some crackfic stuff in SG1 (Daniel Jackson's Diaries, and AUs and kidfic) there's nothing like what is happening in SGA and I have to say I'm glad of that. I like stuff that is close to the show. But I did like that penguin story, too. I just wouldn't want most of the SG1 stories to be like those.

Having been around SGA fans in person as they talk about both shows, well, it makes me inclined not to be around them in future. Because there was some SG1 fans who wouldn't give SGA a chance, they tend to diss broadly all the SG1 fans. In fact, it's almost like the secret handshake that will be sure to drive off the SG1 fans. Whatever. And those fans that think TPTB have some great intricate plans for SGA? They're the ones on crack. I could not believe the faith in the "high quality" of writing of SGA that the younger fans would talking up.

I could go on but it's not my intention to diss a show that you like. I like it, too, but this ain't a Whedon production. It's light, it's fun, and I like watching McKay scream like a girl and run.

It'll be very interesting to see what happens when Daniel goes to Atlantis in S10 of SG1. What tone will the show have? Will it be silly or will he bring his usual serious stuff with him? I wonder what characters he'll be interacting with. It's be fun to see him chattering in Czech with Zelenka. Will Ronan accept him or do his usual intimidation thing? It should be entertaining at least.

I think the one who started it all it's called Mating rituals. The author pulled it off the net, but you can find it via google cache. To be honest I don't really like penguin stories (or centaurs, for that matter) but the idea makes me giggle.

it's like walking into a room where everyone is laughing hysterically at a paper cup on the floor; maybe you had to be there when it happened and travel together with the others to be in synch with the merriment.

Definitely there's a lot of that. It's the niche effect, maybe, who knows. Lots of inner jokes, and people who know each other and all. I like the more serious stuff, and most of the gen is good, but as I don't plan to get involved as I was with SG-1, I get to lurk, upload the rare episode and avoid deep interaction except for the people I know.

And those fans that think TPTB have some great intricate plans for SGA? They're the ones on crack. I could not believe the faith in the "high quality" of writing of SGA that the younger fans would talking up.

*g* They don't know ptb, haven't experienced them. I find myself wondering why SGA is such fun despite the writing or the stupid. In fact, they have made some mistakes in season 2 that might be critical in other seasons, but the show is still young and positive. And they have David Hewlett, which helps a lot (him being the only one in the cast who can act and all... Uh, sorry, I think Paul McGillion can act too)

I could go on but it's not my intention to diss a show that you like. I like it, too, but this ain't a Whedon production. It's light, it's fun, and I like watching McKay scream like a girl and run.</>

Hey, no problem. I sensed some of that, and living where I live, I can very much avoid the crazy people, which is good. There was animosity in the Sg-1 fandom (still is, myself was guilty of a bit of that) and there is now animosity towards sg-1 fans, which is maybe silly, but that's life. SGA fandom is now the new toy, people are going there a lot, and it's not going to be nice and giggly for long. Hey, people don't remember, but sg-1 fandom used to be a very nice place, and we had our stupid inner jokes. No penguins, though. ;)

I have decided to have fun and go with the ride. I would never dream of saying its a "good" show like BSG, which is well written and well acted and... But as you say it's light and fun, there is potential and the silly humor cracks me up. Plus Rodney. :) From time to time they even give us a decent script like Michael, which is a bonus.

I was quite excited about this, but now am a bit more skeptical. I'm afraid we'll only get to see Elizabeth, which is a shame. It's a sg-1 episode, which means we won't see all the Atlantis cast, just one or two of them because they are filming at the same time. :( Come to think of it, maybe it would have been better to have Daniel in an Atlantis episode... Well, hope we at least see someone else other than Elizabeth.

I just tried to google cache and wayback Mating Rituals but both have been blocked by the writer. You don't have that story saved anywhere, do you? Pretty please?

SGA has a party atmosphere right now and they are loving it. But there's this part of my mind that keeps going, "But how can all this be about SGA?!" *g*
Most of the veteran fans I talked to last weekend knew the show was heavily flawed but were delighted by other aspects of the show.

David Hewlett is wonderful and I look forward to McKay in each ep. But having said that, I'll also say I think it might have been better to leave him totally out of Michael all together. His scene seemed very much like they just needed something to happen to get him on screen for a few minutes, and it didn't seem to add anything to the story.

I hope they don't have Daniel with Weir. She doesn't do anything interesting! I want drama, danger, a touch of humor and for Daniel to discover something important. If he's going to be futzing about with Atlantis, he'll need someone with the gene (Shepard, unless Daniel has it) and someone technical like, let's see...maybe McKay or Zelenka? *g* They could do that and have a big Weir, Teyla, Ronan adventure on SGA.

I was at that panel with the two young fans leading it, the one about SGA and postmodernism...they didn't watch BSG, so couldn't (didn't want to) refer to that show. I'm the person who sat in the back and then said that Weir was contemptable. (I may have been overreacting...con excitement and so forth)

I love the Animalia sequence. The two parts should be URLed together on - shoot, what's that SGA site? *rakes brain* Karendreamer would know it. I have it downloaded, if you'd like a copy.

I was wary of that panel so I was at the swapmeet table digging about while I listened to the panel for about 5 minutes. When I saw how focused and serious they were, we left. So, unfortunately, I didn't get to see you say Weir was comtemptable! What did they say to that, anyway? I liked the first Weir, thought S1 Weir was useless. S2 has a stronger Weir but I would be REALLY worried if I was stationed on Atlantis. Argh!

Animalia sequence was delightful. The writer really has a way with words and the humor was so well done. I think I have both parts. It starts out with Rodney discovering Daniel is a tarsier and ends with John giving Rodney a pebble, right? Do you happened to have Mating Rituals, the story Nausica mentioned? I just tried google cache and the wayback machine and both say the writer has put a block up. I hate when that happens! *g*

Thanks!

Hmm...I'll have to check, but I have a feeling I don't have "Mating Rituals". Why would the writer do that? *scratches head*

Well, if you're referring to Mating Rituals being blocked, it's not -- waybackmachine pulls the story off without a hitch... unfortunately with my old, ugly website layout *sniggers*
Sorry if it gave you girls trouble. There shouldn't be any blocks on the site unless it's blocked from the server itself, in which case there's nothing that can be done about it.

Thank you! I see that it's Becket/McKay and no penguins. *g* It's nice enough, so I don't see why the story was pulled.

In SG1, Quinn pulled her marvelous stories. I keep wanting to rec them to new folks and give them the address on the Wayback machine, but that seems possibly wrong? It's just so sad!!
