Doctor Syn

Anyone remember that lovely movie with Patrick McGoohan? It was based on the novels of Russell Thorndike and they have been out of print for decades. Apparently, some publishing house has reprinted them because Amazon has a few titles of the series, published in June of 2004. I'm so excited! That movie though...I was utterly captivated by McGoohan's Dr. Syn. Powerful, mysterious, heroic and a total rogue--when he wasn't being the milktoast vicar. And he was sexy as hell. I must have been all of 5 years old when I was swept away by the goings on at Romney Marsh.

Did I mention I was excited?

Ooh. I loved that movie too! I can barely remember it, but I do remember being enthralled by the main character. We'll have to have a viewing when you get it!

I think I might have a copy of this on VHS. Somewhere. I'd love to see it again. I see they are selling for like $70 on ebay. Huh. If I find it, let's get some popcorn and watch it.

Did you see the "DVD mystery"? That apparently at one point Amazon.com was taking names for a waiting list, but now they've stopped, and are saying the DVD will be available "some time in 2005".

Yeah, I saw that. Looks like they are going to release it (maybe) just before a Warner Bros film with a similar set up. If that's the case, then we'll have it by June. Finger's crossed!

I think I was maybe 11-ish when I saw the series. Several years ago, the Disney Channel showed them again in the wee hours. They *might* be available on video.... I read one of the books (actually, I thought there was only one - there's more?) and was surprised to see that Disney made quite a few changes, presumably to appeal to kids more. Yes, very sexy - and it was only a few years after that "Danger Man", aka Secret Agent, aired here, before The Prisoner, and I was a huge fan of that too. As I recall, I had some major h/c thoughts for any and all of the characters Patrick played.

Yeah. He's one of those actors that I'll watch anything he's in. I've got the box set of The Prisoner; that was such a lovely head trip! I adored it. Did you ever see the Secret Lives of Tomesina? It was another Disney film but absolutely lovely.

Actually, I was reading one of the books, and I kept thinking, Syn and Mipps...just friends or something more?

BTW, the raccoons are very active tonight. Back and forth, back and forth. They're a little spooked, but not enough to just leave the area. Still as cute as can be.

Turns out I wasn't as young as I thought when I saw it - one of those links to the Disney Scarecrow site said it aired in 1964, so I was 14-15. Yes, I loved Thomasina, because I am also a Susan Hampshire fan and she was his love interest, "Laurie the Witch". Mmmm, might be interesting to slash Dr. Syn. Too bad the guy who played Mipps wasn't more attractive. I also had a crush on the evil young British officer - he was quite handsome! I followed some links, and found out that he died (but only born in 1939), and has two sons who are also actors. Wow. Did you know that the little girl in Thomasina was the daughter of Roy Dotrice? I think she was also in Upstairs Downstairs, as an adult. She played a housemaid.

Awww! Give the lil' coons some grapes for me! Precious....

For slash to be successful, it really does require two cute guys. Mipps doesn't qualify. Maybe he just needs recasting in my head. ;-) The evil young officer, he was sweet on Jenny, wasn't he? Did he choose the girl or evil? I forget.

The little girl does bear a strong resemblence to Dotrice.
I'm not surprised. I think I remember her from Upstairs Downstairs.

The raccoons have been by once already. Just before dawn last night, the three legged guy stopped by. It's amazing he does as well as he does. The kibble was mostly gone, and I opened the door slowly. He just backed off maybe half a step and was actually still within reach, and just waited patiently for some more kibble. I'm sure he must me Cutiepie's brother. He's quite a bit bigger than her, so he must be a boy, I guess.

Mmm, yes - who would you recast as Mipps, if you could postulate a 35 y.o. Dr. Syn, with today's actors? ;-)

Yes, the officer was sweet on the girl, and I *think* he let her go, or her brother go, one time when he caught him/them. So he was sort of a nice guy after all. But my memories are a bit vague.

Karen Dotrice was also the little girl in Mary Poppins. She has a sister Michele who is married to Edward Woodward.

Don't you wish you could read the thoughts of the raccoons, i.e. what they think of the nice ladies who put out a picnic and recreation for them every night? ;-) They must have figured out you're pretty harmless by now. Wonder if the three-legged one has a mate and kits of his own? That is cool that he's managed so long, survival of the fittest and all that.

P. S.

I think we must be sisters. Poor Illya! I was captivated by him getting tied up all the time and needing to be rescue by Nepoleon.

Did you ever see Alias Smith and Jones? McCallum, McGoohan and Pete Duel were my first three big crushes.

I don't think we ever got Alias Smith and Jones or else I missed it for some reason and since I was a big fan of westerns I doubt I would have missed it.

For me the third major crush was Ross Martin as Artemus Gordon in Wild Wild West I just loved the man.

So does that makes us 2/3 sisters? ;-)

No, 3/4 sisters. Let's see...Artie was constantly getting tied up by the bad guys and needing to be rescued, too. And he would have given his life for James, as Illya would have for Nepoleon, as Heyes would for Kid Curry.

You may have noticed I put a bid in for one of your The Champions DVDs. I was quite smitten with Richard. Are we now 4 for 5??

There's a re-occuring theme here, I think. ;-)

LOL there does seem to be a pattern doesn't it?

Well in the case of The Champions it's a tie between Richard and Stuart. After all we did get The Interrogation where Stuart's character got "interrogated" and he did end up getting knocked over the head often enough ;-)

So yeah 4/5 sisters

Stuart. I remember him being all sweaty and confused. It was a good look for him. I did feel a little cheated that when Richard was kidnapped, he wasn't hurt at all. Even as a small child, I knew that that was both a lost opportunity and just plain wrong!

Agreed. What's the point of having a character kidnapped and nothing happens to him? I mean at least a little bump on the head or something ;-)

Tied up at least. Physically threatened goes without saying. The captive should be worried! Richard was quite comfy and busy playing mindgames, darn it!

Oh gawd this is spooky! I'm an Illya (vs. Napoleon) girl, always had a Thing for Arty, and used to think pre-slashy thoughts about Richard when I was barely a teen!

On a slightly related note (sexy Disney heroes), anyone else in love with the Swamp Fox (a very young Leslie Nielsen)? I loved that series, and thought LN was *hot* (I think he made this was just post-Tammy).

It too was a "Wonderful World of Disney" series, predating the Scarecrow by 5 years. It aired in 1959. It was about Francis Marion, revolutionary war hero, played by Leslie Nielsen. Patrick Macnee is credited as "British captain"! Here's what
IMDB has to say.
more info and pic.

Hope you have fun. I'm going to the mini Ren Faire in Long Beach tomorrow.
